I was just noticing the distinctive compression in the image. Some people cant see it, especially on a CRT which creates a natural rich blur surrounding the image artifacts (LCDs are sharper), but I can, by how clean the lines should be.

I would say that PNG and JPG are excellent formats to use for the web, so is GIF. You are right, JPEG is smaller than PNG because it is a compressed format that is lossy. Some .PNG files contain object data and other data compatible with most PNG image decoders. If you have a 640x480 PNG over 1 MB, then there's a problem. But keep in mind that this is a drawing, not a digital image taken by a camera. So it is more preferable to use lossless compression like PNG to preserve its original quality. Another person's opinion on http://www.scantips.com/basics09.html suggests not to use JPEG (listed under "Worst Choice" in the table) for graphics (not photographs). It also suggests TIFF and PNG for quality photographs. But you're right, JPEG (and GIF) decrease file size dramatically.
