That is a bit gothic, I'm not sure charm is the best word to use.
You really can see the differences between the French and German designs. The French have a little ostentatious flair to their design, as if they are conscious about the legacy and legend accorded to their guillotine. The Germans, however, are all about efficiency and ease of use. Everything is metallic, easy to manufacture and maintain, and easy to operate.
That's really quite morbid of me to analyze discrepancies of French and German design. Creepy.
