I've been trying to decide between getting a 6x8 tablet and a 9x12 tablet. Unfortunately, I don't have a 9x12 to experiment with. But it occured to me when I woke up this morning that I could alter the mapping area on the 6x8 to simulate the 9x12 (albeit without being able to reach the full extents of the screen).
Soooooo... I tried it.
And I immediately felt more comfortable with the pseudo 9x12 scaling. I see what people are talking about now when they say that a close 1:1 scale between the tablet and screen really matters.
I switched back to normal 6x8 mapping and sketched the head in the upper right. And yeah... the difference in scale throws me off just a little bit. Enough that it tends to deform what I'm trying to sketch. I can feel myself struggling with it... the pen just doesn't land quite where I expect.
The other thing I'm doing here is messing around with Art Rage (free version) and trying that out a bit. All of this is quickie two second doodling.
Ah. The joy of scraps.

How satisfied are you with ArtRage? If you like it, that's awesome, but I personally found it to be a little...well...weird. Artweaver seems to make more sense to me. Plus, Artweaver actually has the power to make a generic brush that's a circle of size blah that doesn't try to replicate anything, like, you know, even Paint can do. (It doesn't come with it, though--you have to custom-make it. Still, totally worth it)
Unless you -like- brushes that replicate real world media, in which case either program is fine, depending on how weird you find the ArtRage interface.
