Ummmh! Interesting question! I usually try to internalize the character in my mind and from there I think of a pose. I like to collect anime figures, so probably I am very influenced by them.
In order to keep proportions and forshortening, references help A LOT. For which I often use Pinterest, since the photography there is more artistic-oriented than a generic search through Google.
But sometimes you won't find the exact pose you thought of, so I also use MagicPoser! (Phone app is superior to the browser version, but it comes much more in handy to me)- https://webapp.magicposer.com/
This specific pic did not use any references, which is rare, but the process still applies. The reason I was able to draw this without references is that I've gotten a lot of muscle memory and simpler characters like this are doable on the fly 'v'
