I draw a lot of rats. And well, I have some opinions on how to render them without making them look like singing animatronics.

But the important thing is, even if he were, he doesn't look like he'd utter the phrase "Argh, matey!" and the other one definitely does.
Watching this i can see my Rat has some on both sides. Specially the number 4 xD
There version with more human details and other with more Animalistic Details, depends on how the artist or the guy who is purchasing wants.
Take both. Erase the ears, and the teeth if you want. Mr. Egg eyes looks like either Joe Camel, Scooby Doo or a shank of ham growing a head, I'm not sure which. Makes me think of people drawing a kangaroo who don't know what a kangaroo looks like, too. No matter what though, remove those ears, and you can't tell what it's supposed to be. Do the same to the right and remove the ears completely and you still can tell you're at least looking at a rodent, or maybe a lagomorph.
Could've also just put a picture of the Great Mouse Detective in place of Trash Rat. Sure, he's a 'mouse,' but since he doesn't even look like a mouse that'd just add to the criticisms. A buddy of mine kind of misinterpreted this post as me making a dig at cartoonish designs, but it's more of this particular kind of design I wanted to poke fun at. It's not like my rats are perfectly realistic, they're just kind of balanced with what I consider an ideal ratio of stylization and some realism here and there. For max accuracy I'd add some variants for each, but, this'll do for now. It's just super important that people know what I like and don't like in rat design, so that they can plan their lives accordingly.
Though according to the holy rat chart, this is just ratcism for differently art-styled rats
