To be fair, this is very common behavior in "Dungeon Crawl" and similar Roguelike games. You find items that are "unidentified" and won't know what their use is until you either use a Scroll of Identify (which reveals the true effects of any item) or just risk it and try it.
It's frustrating when you have a Potion of Healing and you didn't use it because you didn't know what it really was. Part of the fun of the game is taking those chances.
