He's into balloons and getting trapped in them. One of those types of balloons is the Anti-Balloon, which envelops you inside it and traps you. You are also unable to pop your way out from the interior once you're sucked in.

I'm not sure if Anti-Balloons come in purple, but given that I've seen red and blue ones before, it's a possibility.
