Fanart Friday #21 The Green Ranger Saga
Best childhood memory for me. Also had a random thought occured to me while thinking about the shoulder mantle for the Green Ranger looked like Saiyan armor. So I was inspired to go animeish with a heavy influence from Vegeta and Nappa in compostion and style. I attemtped the helmet but it felt so wrong to cover up such a glorious 90's mullet. Looking forward to resuming work on this.
Decided to give Goldar Midriff, Multiple reasons. It kinda makes sense for movement that a warrior wouldn't be so heavily armored. Having more space for the wingspan so the armor is more chest, shoulders and arm focused. Also a bit of warrior's jab where he leaves his vulnerable stomach exposed knowing his enemies wouldn't even be able to reach the killing blow even if they were willing to Kill. Also AAAAABBBS
Finally colored it after a while and made that bitch shiny. Gold upon gold. And the background is just a DBZ background that I just copied and pasted elements from andontop of to make something a bit different looking than the same one a couple thousand times. but the imagery will help to reinforce the DBZ influence.

part of me plays with the idea of jason and tommy having been twins (and reincarnations via zyuranger instead of stasis) parent trapped and only meet because of the competition and rita uses it to help push tommy till hes fed up but she doesnt care because hell do the job indepently instead of for her and the annoying singing is in tact
Correct, One HSB filter layer set to warm red shadows for basic shading to keep the image warm. A second HSB layer set to cool blue to have some ambient occusion shadows and enhance the overal casted shadow bits. A yellow reflective overlay high layer to enhance the colors that are hit by the sun. And a specular white layer for the glossy and shiny highlights on the metallic and reflective surfaces.
Red highlight layer, however Red is a fickle color in the digital method, as a base color It tends to overpower any highlights that are applied to it. It can tint things a certain amount unless it is actually used to darken things, but it would require additional layers specifically for any red surfaces just to brighten it beyond pure red. But any and all highlight layers should have one ending goal to bring things closer to white or at least to increase the brightness of that base color a significant amount. Not everything unfortunately gets to do the same thing 100% of the time as other things. That's just the nature of Color Theory and the differences between using RGB and CMYK in the digital format. The underlying math of color values is different according to the nature of how that color adds or subtracts to other colors it is mixed with.
TLDR; Red specifically is a problem color that tends to be difficult to add highlights to, It can add highlights to everything else in however those colors tend to mix, but it cannot add or enhance Red colors already present. But you can use an overlay mode on most other colors to create a tint to the bightness of all layers you appply it to. Just be aware not all colors operate the same way that Yellow or White does in acting as a light source color enhancement.
