Kaleida: white-leafed plant
★ Side-Project ★
This is the first of several plant species I'm going to show you guys: the gennaibus plant. Its most notable detail is that it has white leaves.
The patches of plant we can see here are growing in iron-rich soil, hence the orange ground. The leaves are white to reflect the harsh sun, and the plant photosynthesises using its stems. The sporophytes - the large squash-shaped objects at the ends of its stems - make for bland, but nutritious eating, and are the size of small melons.

Planned ret-cons: I feel like more can be done to really show these plants off to best effect, and I wonder how they'd look in limestone-rich (ie., white) soil. Plants can and do colour themselves for camouflage and it would make sense for them to have evolved white for that reason.
What is Kaleida?
Kaleida is a worldbuilding project without a storyline or individual characters. Most of my clients come to me with stories and characters and treat worldbuilding as an after-thought, so I'm doing the opposite and focusing solely on my worldbuilding. This species is a result of my research on how to create an alien ecosystem, which I wrote as a blog series. Read it here.

Hmm... If the leaves are white to reflect the harsh sun - whilst the stems are utilized for photosynthesis... What is the point of the leaves?
Do they funnel water inwards? Do they provide anti-pathogenic properties? Do they store nutrients? Do they expel a large amount of waste - from processes of respiration when the sun is not available? Do the leaves provide nutrients or spaces for a symbiotic relationship with another organism?
Interesting concepts, but the leaves are an interesting subject to inquire.

It's been an age since I even thought about these plants! They like pine cones but green, so if you were to cut into one you wouldn't see all that much. I think you could theoretically eat them as they're mature when they're green - they never turn hard and woody. They'd be nutritious as they're designed to make the next generation, so there's that, but I imagine they'd be a tad bitter or overly savoury, or maybe tough!
