If I were ever to play Warhammer 40K, I would play as THE REASONABLE GUARD. Like the Imperial Guard, but with strategy, and tactics, and less insanity.
I've heard of a game con where they had a continuously running game of warhammer 40k going, and an infantry heavy group of Space Marines teamed up with a vehicle heavy team of Imperial Guard. It became everyone vs. them, because no one could beat them.
