“Madness,” Navot k’Ven declared, clucking her tongue against the roof of her mouth in disbelief after the Foreign Minister had finished briefing her about the Terran destruction of Wolf 359. “Utter madness. Is this race even worth saving, Vāērdhek?”
“The Sovereign still believes so,” the Minister replied, “although the Family Council is expressing some doubts. The Combined Services have the opinion that this was a desperation move, knowing the proximity of the system to Terra itself. The High Admiral is quite angry at the loss of so many shlani.”
“I can certainly sympathize.” The Minister waited as Navot got herself under control, even smiling as the vir’s pet morzin slithered up her arm, to coil around her shoulders and nuzzle the side of her face. She smiled as she scratched the legless mammal between its tiny ears before asking, “What are my instructions, sir?”
The Minister smiled. “You are still speaking with Ambassador Balakrishnan?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Excellent. “Arrange a meeting, and tell her that you speak with the Sovereign’s voice.” His smile widened as Navot sat up straighter, her eyes widening and feline pupils narrowing. “Tell her to tell her government that The Race understands the gesture Terra has made regarding the destruction of Wolf 359, and warn them that we are on guard for similar traps. Tell her also that continuing with these tactics will only result in the destruction of Sol System and everyone living there.”
“Yes, sir.”
“The Sovereign proposes a cessation of hostilities, with all forces to remain in place.” This was understandable; what The Race would hold, they would keep. “But there remains the matter of the repeated attempts by the Terran Confederacy’s military to destroy the Imperial Homeworld. If Terra truly desires peace, they will immediately surrender to Imperial justice the entire leadership of the Confederacy.”
Navot blinked. “Even their ‘Emperor?’”
“Even him.” The Minister’s gaze grew cold. “This is not open to negotiation.”
“Yes, sir.”
