With this simple b/w comp for the cover I tried to capture the true feeling of Jim Theis' classic story. Since I was going for "Frazetta," I originally wanted to add the frost giant brothers from "The Frost Giant's Daughter" to the background, but with the Player's Handbook reference in there, there just wasn't enough room.

Smokescale and I did a dramatic reading of Jim Theis' masterpiece. By the surly beard of Mrifk, we broke down several times just trying to speak every poor line, bad spelling, and misuse of the word "slut". Even as we were poking fun at it and doing our best voice acting, it was torture for us.
