I think your proportions are off... pretend you zoomed out. The fire would be directly next to them, no more then a few feet away, based on where the smoke is. Also, they seem pretty condensed together as far as distance between each other. At that density, you'd think there'd be more in the background. Unless that's part of the unfinished area.

I'd make the scene more misty with smoke rather then a solid dense plume of it, and especially not from such a specific spot. I'd also try to spread out the characters more. This is a panic! If there aren't that many creatures, they wouldn't be so close to one another.
