So for the longest time I've been thinking about Super Mario RPG sprites..but I didn't think they were plausible, due to the way they were rendered.
I guess I proved myself wrong.
This is Bowser! I'm definitely doing the rest. My ironing paper is shot, so it kinda..looks fucked up. This sprite looks really awesome from a distance.
889 beads.

It's so short and easy though. As a kid I had a hard time with the game and it felt long but a few months ago when I got it on Wii's VC, it felt rather short and was too easy. But still really love the game.
On a side note though... obviously your best sprites there are when you have something to look at and yet when you do custom they are rather... plain. You should consider, when doing a more custom one, to add some shadowing or shading to add some depth like you do on the sprites, such as this, that have shadowing. Yes I know it's harder to do your own shadowing but could be a way for improvement.
Could obviously test how it would look before actually attempting with a custom, if you don't do that already, with paint course 1 pixel being a bead each and such but yeah... also I wonder if there is a way to fill in those holes with the same color bead in the end to make it look better cause I notice they only look better being small and a distance such as the thumbnail. Dunno how big or small they are in person.
Anyway just wanted to suggest that because well yeah... anyway good job there.

I honestly haven't done any custom sprites in ages. Most of the ones that I've made recently are direct rips from games. A lot of my most recent ones are just kinda retro and admittedly, I don't like most of 'em. They're very simple and plain, and eh. I've been lacking inspiration as of late.
As it stands, I don't do custom spritework at -all-. It's limited to maybe a minor recoloring or something, but other than that, I only do what I have to do in order to get sprites in beadable condition. I would either have to learn spriting myself (which I probably won't do, I'm artistically retarded), or just find more sprites done up in this style.
I appreciate the feedback though, thank you!

Hmm I see. Just well I am saying and all because it's like looking at a picture and drawing that same picture except you do that with beads and all. And I know you rarely at all have done custom spritework but well... yeah. I mean I know what you do must take quite some time but I mean well... I am almost afraid to say because I don't want to offend or upset. I don't mean it in a bad way or anything but... well I really dunno how to put it right. Eh... oh well.
By all means, please express yourself. As long as you're not being outright insulting or derogatory (you're not in this case), I appreciate legitimate feedback. I'd like to hear your thoughts on stuff, and maybe I can put any misunderstandings to rest here.
If you're not comfortable doing it on here, you can always send me a note.

Heh it's part of why I have trouble judging on someone's work like when a friend shows me something. But anyway what I kinda wanna say is that I mean maybe anyone can do what you are doing there. I know that can upset some people and others it wouldn't. I mean that is not a bad thing because you actually take the time and spend the money to go through all the trouble to do what you do.
That is why I brought up custom sprites. Because it's more original and based on your own doing. Maybe even look at a non-pixel image to make a sprite of, my avatar is an example but I don't mean do my avatar but you know just a non-pixel image. Well it still is pixels but not all game pixels... well I think you know what I mean. If it is even possible to make a pixel image out of a non-simple non-pixel game sprite image? Really dunno if I am explaining it well enough.
But yeah you can either try to make a sprite of something that originally was not a sprite, being sure to maybe add shadowing instead of a solid color fox face, some darker beads like you did in this image, but I mean the pixel was there for you to look at so you knew where went here or there on the shadows. But of course drawn images can come with the shadowing already as well.
Anyway it was just a thought. If you are looking for something different that is a challenge. And well I kind of overlooked you said you were artistically challenged so doing your own sprites would be tough then.

Nah dude, I hear exactly what you're saying, and I take no offense to it at all.
I've honestly said the exact same thing to people many times in the past when they've said that I'm extremely talented or whatnot. I appreciate those kind of compliments, I really do, but the fact of the matter is that the art I do is more an assembly job than anything else. The sprites and the colors themselves are the more artistic part of this whole thing, but the real 'talent' would ultimately lie in the process. It takes a lot of time (this sprite took about 2-3 hours), patience, a steady hand, and skill to iron it all properly. You have to have all the right colors, and you have to match everything as best you can. You need to monitor your iron, and make sure that everything is perfect. It only becomes more difficult the larger the sprite is.
A lot of people do the smaller sprites that I've done. A LOT of people have. I have produced a few larger caliber sprites that I consider pretty decent, such as the hydralisk and the mana beast.
I'm not a very distinguished bead sprite artist. I'm aware of that. I'm decent, but I'm not one of the ones that really stands out in the crowd. What you're suggesting has been suggested to be in the past as well. The way to really stand out is to get into custom spritework. To design your own sprites, to do things that aren't basically spoon fed to you. As much as I'd want to get into that, I have absolutely no experience with it. I have a few friends that help me out on occasion and all that, but the overall truth is that I"ll probably be stuck working with pre-made sprites my whole life.
That being said, I appreciate your feedback and advice on all this. I see exactly what you're saying and I can understand it. Hopefully this provides just a bit of insight onto how I feel about the whole thing, and why I do what I do. Please ask any more questions or leave any more thoughts if you have them.

Ah I see. Well that is good. Just I was afraid that you might get upset at that because you know, people out there who get upset at such things. Like erm I am bad at example but someone says "you are wearing a blue hat" and they get all upset when I mean he is wearing a blue hat. I dunno. Heh.
Anyway good that you understand.
