Chapter 24: Run like the…
If everything else wasn’t in such a messed up state Kate would have quite enjoyed it. The being that was somehow the abstract concept of the wind enveloped her as she ran. Each step felt like it catapulted her onward. She felt almost impossibly light and her limbs moved with a speed that even her raptor like sergal legs couldn’t replicate on their own. It felt like the wind helped push her leg up whenever she drew up to take another step then helped push hard against the ground. All while pushing her forward hard and reducing her own weight to almost nothing as she rocketed along at immense speed. The wind even seemed to be pressing on her breasts, keeping them contained and supported.
Ordinarily she would have had words with the wind for grabbing her like that, but she did see the benefit of it. She was nude still after all, a state that she found didn’t bother as much as it used to, but running at this speed with the girls free to flop around would be painful at best and likely throw her off balance too.
As the blue furry rocket streaked across the battlefield the smoke and soot and sulfur gases seemed to part themselves and arc around her. Whether it was due to her speed blasting them around her or more of ‘the winds’ doing, she wasn’t positive, but it did mean she mostly got to breath clean air instead of the smoke and soot of the battlefield.
She aimed herself right at the worst of the shouts and screams. At a towering pillar of smoke that likely represented her mate’s location. She dodged around more than a few soldiers running in the opposite direction as she went. Most barely more than glanced at her though some stumbled as they turned their heads at her passing.
At her current speed and general lack of resistance it didn’t take her too long to reach the epicenter where war himself raged. Kate skidded to a stop and just stared for a long moment.
“Oh god. oh god oh god.” She stammered. To say that Lex looked a bit different than normal would be an understatement. He was enormous, far larger than she had ever seen him grow before, his eyes glowed with white hot embers, and not metaphorically either, Flames danced from his sockets every time he changed where his was looking, picking a new victim. His maw had more teeth than usual, almost too many and it even seemed like there were multiple rows in there, all dripping with thick red syrup that just had to be blood. His fur was rigid and looked like it was composed of blades rather than hairs and given that there was random articles and even a corpse or two that seemed to be stuck to his coat it seemed that it likely was blades.
Around him were soldiers. Maybe trying to get away but a few bravely standing their ground, or maybe they just knew that running was useless. One after another their weapons bounced of Lex’s fur and one by one his jaws clamped down around the soldiers and bit them into pieces. One big chomp seemed enough to sever a man in two at the middle.
“Lex!” Kate shouted at the top of her lungs, but if he had heard her over the battle’s roar, he ignored her and continued at the troops spilling more and more open. Kate took a deep breath and tried to put some real power behind her next attempt. “LEX! Listen to me”
The wind must have helped her as her voice boomed like thunder the second time, for a split second drowning out the rest of the battle and turning the thing that Lex had become towards her. For a brief moment she thought he would listen. Before he rushed her full speed with his maw opened wide revealing a bit of razors within.
“SHIT!. LEX!” Kate shouted and dodged to the side as fast as she could. Briefly forgetting how much faster she was how she ended up tumbling across the bloody battlefield, but had dodged more than 50 feet in one step. More than enough to avoid the initial lunge. Lex seemed confused for a minute then looked around for a target. Before he could dig back into the soldiers Kate shouted again, “Lex, Its me, your Mate. I’m here for you!”
Kate was a bit more graceful at dodging the second time. Staying on her feet this time while the soldiers gawked.
“Inanna” One of them said, pointing. Kate didn’t have a clue what ‘Inanna’ meant but she didn’t have time for it to matter, or even to feel embarrassed at being so exposed where all could see her. She dodged again and began to run a relatively slow circle around Lex, though in reality she was well above normal sprinting speed. Lex was clearly zeroed in on her as the target, though also didn’t seem to understand anything she said.
“Tame the beast, Inanna!” Someone shouted followed by others. Kate would have to one day figure out what the heck ‘Inanna’ meant, but for now perhaps she could derail things by leading Lex away. He did seemed focused on her, so instead of circling…
After the next lunge Kate took off in a line. Backtracking her approach and letting out a yell as she went. Sure enough Lex was VERY hot on her heels. The ground almost seemed to boil with his footsteps, and he was, to her shock, gaining. Kate put down all the gas she could and accelerated. She hoped that the wind wasn’t weakening, but it didn’t seem like she was slowing down. Lex was just so god damned fast. The sound of the earth shaking and tearing with his claws behind her was followed closely by the feeling of Lex’s hot breath on her back. He really was about to catch up with her. She would have to go back to dodging soon and she hadn’t gotten him lured all the way off the battlefield yet.
Right when he was abut to catch up his roars and bellows were replaced with an earsplitting cry of raw anger and pain. Risking a glance back Kate saw what looked like lightning dancing around the back of Lex’s neck. Lex roared in protest for a few long moments as the effect crackled, then began to turn back to the battle.
“NO YOU DON’T!” Kate shouted, “I’m right here. Don’t you want me?”
Lex started to turn back to her but the lightning crackled again and he once again turned away. As he did so she saw it. something was on the back of his neck. Something very not natural.
Kate let out a rumbling enraged growl of her own. That was it. That was the thing being used to drive him to this and control him. She hated it and the lord who put it there with all her being, but at least she knew how to get lex back now.
Kate gave chase. Shouting at the top of her lungs to keep Lex as unsure of his direction as possible, giving her a chance to catch up. She leapt up and landed onto his back with the intent of going for whatever the device was. Upon landing Lex twisted and roared at her torquing around to bite at her and sending her flying in the process. She hit the ground and tumbled desperately scrambling to avoid the rain of teeth and claws that followed until she managed to find her footing and leap again.
This time she leapt towards him along the ground then jumped straight up. Managing to get under Lex’s chin she leapt up and grabbed his giant neck and held on for dear life as he thrashed. Kate wasn’t sure how she managed to hold on with her arm and feet all the while groping wildly for the thing on the back of Lex’s neck, but after a few tries she found it.
She gripped it with all her might and let go with her other limbs allowing herself to be swung up onto Lex’s back again this time up near the neck where she needed to be. With both hands she grabbed at the thing. A stone tablet with runes carved into it that seemed to be grafted to his neck. She gripped with both hands and tried to pull it off. Lex roared with her attempts, but she didn’t let up. She got onto her feet and pushed hard with her legs while she pulled with her arms. Suddenly the stone thing cracked and Kate thought she had it.
Instead of coming loose however it erupted. Exploding in a blinding light of magical energy. Kate’s hands lost purchase as the thing she was gripping disintegrated, and she felt a sudden immense pain in her gut as an arcing bolt of elemental magic punched her hard in the stomach and sent her flying.
While she was in the air she wasn’t quite sure what was happening. She knew she was hurt but the pain seemed oddly distant. In fact what she felt was tired and groggy, she struggled to keep her eyes open even as she rag dolled through the air, and as she careened into the ground her whole world went dark.
