I mean, hopefully this is #01 and there will be others... Anyway, I decided to bite the bullet and finally learn some sculpting!
What helped me was the website named https://thisfursonadoesnotexist.com . It displays a huge selection of AI-generated images. Some good, some... not so, to say the least. But many of them have clear face structure, which makes it easier for me to use them as a training material.
Also, the AI is generating, among others, some really grotesque monsters. Which helps with my confidence issues that were largely preventing me from trying sculpting. Now, even if I get everything wrong, it will not even be able to compete with some of the abominations on that site! Somehow, this simple, humorous change of mindset was exactly what I needed to finally start some sculpting.
Now, this is just a first attempt. I'm well aware that it contains some errors. Also it follows the reference only loosely. I kept the mouth closed for simplicity. But for starters, I think that's enough.

By the very nature and purpose of it, sculpting should be much faster (not for me at the moment though, but I'm still learning).
If retopo is so nightmarish for you, how about investing in some paid add-on? I've seen some really awesome third-party retopo tools for Blender, looked extremely easy to use, but can't tell the name off the top of my head... For my own needs, the bundled Bsurfaces is enough.

Retopoflow is the most popular as far as I know. Still, it's like doing the model all over again even if it's meant to "speed" things up. I do know that once a base mesh is made the sculpting tools can reshape it into any body type you need. I saw a video where someone had a retopologized base mesh of a skinny anime girl and turned it into a beefy guy who had a body like Wreck-It Ralph but more muscular. He used just a few sculpting tools and did it.
I just wish Blender, and other apps, could just have a function where it looks at the model and calculates the retopoology just based the the shape you made. It'd be so much better. It'd be about as good if it did that as you went.
