Prompted by a fan of my early work, I was motivated to find a pair of early coloured drawings of Saara and friend. The color is crude by my later standards, but I was only just beginning to take my work seriously and would learn work more carefully in future. But you can see that most of my early ideas were well developed by 1972. I'm trying to find still earlier work, although it may not survive. I have a lead that I'll fallow up later. Incidentally, when I drew this, there were probably only a handful of physicists who knew what a black hole should look like. I assumed that it would be for all intends and purposes invisible. Now we know that black holes are shrouded by inflowing dust and gas, superheated into incandescence, and the hole is indeed invisible for other reasons.

What I can see of the lines of the ship on the right looks amazing! Like was commonly said of some of the century series fighters "It looks fast just sitting still." The same could be said of the ship on the left.
Were the Spacemobiles of the Space Family Robinson comic an inspiration for the ship on the left?
Looks like you also predicted Star Trek "Skants" ;)

I think Space Family Robinson did feed into my inspiration, but I might have been thinking similar thoughts at the time, and would have come up with something very similar anyway. Other Star Trek inspired stuff also occurred early on, but, by 1973 or so, I hit on the idea of technology so advanced that it didn't require separate gizmos or to carry things around.
