The King of Trinitrons
Here's something that I'd been wanting for a VERY long time--the Guinness Book of World Records world record holder for the largest direct-view CRT television on earth. This is the mighty Sony XBR Trinitron KV-40XBR800, a forty-inch CRT television receiver. It weighs 304 pounds. O_o The KV-40XBR800 was one of the very last Trinitrons made, and the most advanced Trinitron ever conceived. This is the culmination of CRT TV technology, one of only a handful of CRT sets capable of displaying a 720p (progressive) image. It's got a built-in dual voice coil subwoofer. The retail price in 2002 was just over $3,000.
I was very lucky to find this set on Craigslist for a steal ($240!) with its original remote control and an aftermarket stand. I really want the original Sony SU-40XBR8 stand, but the one I've got now is okay. The picture and sound are PHENOMENAL; Mario Galaxy 2 looks better on this TV than any of the hundreds of other TVs I've auditioned. This receiver will blow the doors off any comparably-sized flat panel!

I believe there is a setting for that; I'd need to look my controls over again, hang on...
Try repeatedly pressing the DRC MODE button on the lower left of the remote. Is the source you're using 16:9 or 4:3?
The only real problem, as far as I'm concerned. is the set's sheer massive weight. xD

Neat.
Dad almost bought a 1080i Sony 34" widescreen back in Summer '04...but he was worried about weight and tube depth. (The family needed a set with an ATSC tuner, so it was either that or the half-as-expensive Samsung 30" widescreen...I tried my darndest, and the Sony did have a better picture, but...oh well.)

I have a 34" Trinitron 16x9, thats been brilliant, got it in a duff state in 2004 and replaced the control transformer (loose winding, not varnished properly) and thats been excellent ever since. Have the 40" samsung LED backlit screen in the living room with blu ray player, hd dvd and a media PC and a sound system of my own concoction.
I don't know what the specific model is, but my parents had a 36" CRT Toshiba that would take 1080i, 720p, etc. Sexy CRT. I need to find its model cause now I'm curious of its resolution. HEAVY ASS BITCH THOUGH... LOTS of glass in the front of them. It was also 4/3; they eventually splurged for a 42"-16/9 LCD.
VGA is VGA...
HDMI is retarded... (DVI could do what it does "they" just invented it so everyone who bought a TV with DVI to future proof their purchase had to buy a new TV... DVI is superior to HDMI because it doesn't have this lame HDCP BS...
Anything HD has component inputs. ;)
I have seen plenty of TVs that had VGA inputs. Granted the majority were Rear Projection CRTs...

Yes, this is true. The rear projectors tend to have them. My only RP set does not. (It's for sale xD)
I was wondering about HDMI...thanks for telling me that. So, it's no real loss that my 40-inch Trinitron has DVI, but not HDMI? I did not know that HDCP was integrated with HDMI O_o

*Some* devices that have HDMI outputs will work on DVI inputs... However, those that don't require HDCP on both ends (to make you pay.) Also any digital communications medium/protocol suffers from an effect called "Digital Cliff." Pretty much there is a maximum length an HDMI/DVI-D cable/signal will work flawlessly, go past that length and it just drops off. Whereas analog video/signals would still work, they just might have more noise in the signal... (I'm obviously NOT a fan of the big digital convergence of TV stations. They suffer from the same effect.)
I've also not had good luck using HDMI from a computer to a TV, the TV seems to over-scan. Correcting for this in the computer causes the pixel for pixel resolution to decline. (It looks like shit) Though from what I've heard It might have just been the LCD I was trying this on... (I just use VGA, it works much better and more reliably.)
Also, most people like HDMI because you don't need another cable for Audio. With the cable box we have, the audio just goes away every so often... quite annoying.

Oh my God, don't get me started on the digital conversion...I HATEEE its guts. I miss being able to tune channels with my knobs! All of my vintage sets require cable now. D:
Hah, having the separate audio cable for DVI is no big deal. What I really want to do is connect my Trinitron to my PC and use it as my monitor. 8D

You're completely right saying that flat TVs are soulless. (maybe because they're deFLATed?)
The most soulful TV's were using vacuum-tubes. I once had a russian TV - Rubin 707P Beutiful, soulful and... heavy (23" TV that weigh 57kg IS heavy). Unfortunately I had to give this one away (because I didn't have space for it) :c But it's in good hands, and I know that for sure.

You are so lucky to own one of those. I've heard of that beast and I've always wanted one of those too. But I do have a 30" Panasonic CT-30WX15N CRT HDTV from 2006 and it looks amazing. My favorite thing about it though is that even SD signals look beautiful and perfect on it while LCD HDTV's look like crap with SD signals.
Very, very similar. Other than a few cosmetic differences, and yours having more powerful speakers and no HDMI input. It's pretty much mostly the same. I bet they both use same tube inside though. Isn't Goodwill awesome sometimes. My family jokes about me going to Goodwill so much, but then I show up with a flawless 32" Sony Trinitron HDTV to replace the crappy 15 year old 36" 480i TV in the living room that's really blurry, has a deformed image and has color splotches all around the screen.
Seeing our PS3 connected to that crappy old TV made me want to hurl. It's like night and day going from a messed up, broken 480i TV to 1080i HDTV.
