Just a photo of the inside of the previously shown shield.
I wanted to show the workmanship that went into it.
The bronze cuff in the center is worn over the arm, at the elbow. A strong cord is then run through all the brace loops and gripped by the hand to provide leverage.
Ancient shields weighed somewhere between 20lbs and 30lbs. Contrary to what 300 would like you to believe, the shield were very heavy and couldn't be supported by the arm alone (under combat conditions) for any extended period of time. As a result, the upper rim of the shield was rested on the shoulder right up to the moment of combat.
Also, the term "hoplon" is incorrect when used to refer to the shield. It is a very common error. The correct term is "aspis". The term "hoplon" more appropriately refers to the entire kit of armor, shield, helmet, greaves, etc.
