A mischievous yet compassionate trickster, Piers utilizes generosity and his highly perceptive nature to meet the needs of those he loves and defend anyone who can’t defend themselves.
In the end, it’s miraculous that Piers Renoir was even born, let alone had anything resembling a normal life. The cougar was the result of ghoulish, bleeding edge genetic engineering commissioned in secret by the hegemonic, governing body of Ereas, a habitable planet separated from Earth by several thousand lightyears. Piers’ biological mother and father were criminal black magic users tried, convicted, and later executed by the state as militant, subversive insurgents shortly after their capture by this same governing body. They had long sought to exterminate the existential threat posed by mages, and the boy’s pregnant mother bestowed them with a substantial opportunity to accomplish their despicable goals. In doing so, a team of government officials concocted a scheme to engineer and eventually indoctrinate a supposed “super witch” who could use a sorcerer’s own inherent, reality-warping power set against them.
Once the cougar was born, Piers was placed under the supervision of one Professor Lucie Renoir and her husband whose scientific expertise in myriad fields was a necessity for those subsidizing this endeavor. The two scientists were never formally informed of the nature behind their research, but in due time, they consequently came to care for the boy and named him “Piers” as proof of their unconditional love. In studying this cougar, the couple became sympathetic to other magic users like him who were persecuted merely for the circumstance of their birth and the formidable, hereditary powers they innately retained. During those eight years of Piers’ incarceration and indoctrination, the couple began acting as covert “witch sympathizers” who actively sought to sabotage the enterprise upon learning of its true intentions. With the aid of a mysterious benefactor by the name Cassandra Cassini, the couple set in motion their plan to rescue their son from those who wished him harm and escape together.
Unfortunately, this was not to be, as their plans were discovered beforehand, and in the ensuing chaos, Mr. Renoir lost his life protecting his family. With one final act of rebellious sabotage, he thankfully incapacitated the enterprise beyond repair. As everything burned around them, Miss Cassini was able to spirit away Piers and his adoptive mother from the raging conflagration. The two of them later found refuge among a secret society of casters clandestinely living life in plain sight underneath the ever-watchful gaze of that same governing body which eagerly seeks their eradication. However, even if they were now free to live life anew, the then eight-year-old cougar soon came to understand that acceptance did not come easily within this newfound refuge beneath the streets of Le Bastion des Rêveurs—a monolithic metropolis situated upon the seashore of a vast ocean.
Through no fault of his own, Piers often faced stigma from other mages who distrusted the boy purely on the merits of his lineage. Although life here rarely came without trouble, after a while, the boy and his mother were able to assimilate and establish some semblance of normalcy. Thanks in part to Cassandra Cassini, Piers and Professor Renoir were declared dead in absentia, and in the years which followed, the latter sought to organize an effort to legitimize mage rights and expose government malfeasance. In the meantime, Piers eventually found tutelage under the mentorship of resident virtuosi who, much like his adoptive mother, nurtured his better nature and helped mold him into a kind and compassionate sorcerer. As a result of this training, Piers Renoir now uses a pair of brass knuckles to focus his immense and innate probability-based magic for the purposes of tychokinetic combat—utilizing luck as a weapon to help anyone in need.
As always, I want to extend my thanks to
fcsimba for all that you see here. While Piers is my character, he wouldn't be able to shine so brightly if FC wasn't there to make this possible. My purple boy has hardly looked better, and all kudos should go to FC for their hard work and perseverance!
