Chapter 1: New Adventurers
The young sergal sighed and slowly turned her spear over in the fireplace; six feral rabbits roasted along its length. By all accounts her morning was a successful hunt, by her account it was boring. It wasn’t like she was 8 years old anymore, but she could handle more than rabbits. As a teenaged sergal she was already a fairly ferocious beast in her own right, tight muscles, long claws, she probably wouldn’t need her spear to bring home a good sized buck she figured.
The other’s disagreed, or that’s what they claimed. She figured it was something else though. In addition to being muscular and tall she was also curvy, wide hips, sturdy buttocks, large bust. Heck given the amount of sergal females that were almost flat, she was downright busted. That was her problem too. Many were not so subtly suggesting she stay nearer the home. Sometimes she just wished that….
“HI KATE!” A pleased looking fox hopped over to Kate’s fire. Well she said she was a Kitsune, but given the shear number of different types of canine that apparently existed simplifying helped.
“Hey Saph” Kate said back to Saphira, “Hopefully you got something more interesting than I do”
“Oh, no big game today?” Saphira inquired examining the roasting rabbits. “Looks like a good catch at least.”
“yes yes its fine, but I wish they’d just stop stalling at let me do real hunting. I’m old enough to handle it, but NOOOOO!!!” Kate waved her arms around in a mocking imitation of the older hunters to go along with her sarcastic tone.
“Heh, sorry about that. Heard you were starting to get some suitors too”
“Of course, I do. Got the girls don’t I?” Kate grumbled and gripped her tits through her loose shirt, “About all they are interested in though, that and keeping me at home with ‘kids’ while they do all the fun stuff”
Saphira chuckled, “Curse of hitting puberty I guess. I have the opposite problem”
“Really?” Kate raised an eyebrow, “You’re as stacked as me, shouldn’t you be getting offers too? Heck any girl who hits 16 gets at least SOME proposals, unless their face could eb mistaken for their ass”
“Or their fat belly sticks out farther than their boobs” Saphira said with a chuckle before continuing, “But in my case it’s the tails. They think I’m a mutant or something”
“More than one tail is unusual for most canines, or anyone else” Kate pointed out.
“But NOT unusual for a kitsune like me darn it” She huffed, “but all the guys think if they marry me our kids would come out mutants too.”
“No kitsune’s to date?” Kate asked
“None, we’re pretty rare you know. For that matter so are sergals, not AS rare but there aren’t that many in town to be after you are there?”
“But all that ARE around know I’ve hit puberty and are going for me.” Kate explained, “Not only them too, males of other races are interested as well.”
“Seriously!?” Saphira pouted, “I can’t get anyone at all and you are overloaded. Send a few my way ok?”
“I can try, but really, I could use some time way from this town” Kate complained, while trying to stay focused enough on her rabbits to not burn them.
Saphira started to crack a smile. The sort of smile that she had been cracking since childhood. The smile that said they were probably going to get in trouble but would have so much fun it would be worth it.
“Funny you should say that, katie, because I just found this” She said producing a piece of parchment from her pocket.
“Some paper?”
“It’s a notice. A contract notice for a hunt.”
Kate was immediately interested, notices weren’t for things like ‘hunt a deer’ or the like, they were for help making problems go away, paid very well and sometimes had glory attached too.
“All those are likely already claimed by someone. always some hunter about wanting to pad his pocketbook and ego.”
“Not this one. No-one’s claimed it. Don’t know why. It is for hunting some of those giant scorpion things in the forest. Paid by the tail we bring back.”
“You want to go hunting for an endrega?”
“And why not?” Saphira said crossing her arms, “I think we could kick its ass no problem don’t you?”
“I’m the hunter here”
“Oh look at mis high and mighty. I know some simple magic you know. Might be able to burn it, or scare it. Or at the very least heal you if you get hurt and keep the camp lit if it takes more than one day.
“So you’re my assistant” Kate smirked, intentionally teasing her friend this time, “Gunna do what I say?”
“Partner and no” Saphira huffed. “I shall be a great mage some day and maybe then you can be my assistant.”
Kate laughed, “Sure sure, first have some rabbit then we can see about this ‘hunt’”
The next day was spend doing light preparations before they set off. Kate had her spear and a sword as backup and saphira had a bow and some potions, nothing major, but then again, they were only hunting a single endrega. Scorpion beast would be scary to see but wasn’t THAT large. A spear should dispatch it in short order. Wasn’t even that far into the forest.
“Wonder why this thing lives in such a dank hole, its so dang dark in there” Saphira said as they reached a cave. Tracks outside suggested it was their quarry’s home, “Well, let’s go kick its butt”
“I think most bugs like to live in caves.” Kate sighed, “Just cast light or something. These monsters aren’t about to just stroll around by a roadside with a sign saying ‘stab me’”
“Wouldn’t want them taking the hooker’s jobs” Saphira chuckled as she cast a glow light.
Saphira’s crude stabbing joke elicited an eye roll from Kate, and the pair ventured in ears peaked and tails twitching. It was quiet for a long time, neither girl heard or saw much of anything. The lack of noises was more bothersome than loud sounds, at least if they heard the thing they’d know where it was. Still with the light they could see fine and the cave was fairly linear so hard to be snuck up on.
“Come out come out” Kate taunted the cave, “We just want to kill you, get the reward and sell your body to alchemists for parts”
Saphira winced, “Ugh that’s creepy to think about”
“What, alchemists use monster, uh, fluids, to make potions”
“I know, just…. well I wouldn’t want someone to make potions out of my body”
“Ha, wonder what potions they could make .. Oh shhh I heard something” Kate tensed, as did Saphira and both listened hearing soft scuttling noises. Kate got her spear out and slowly crept deeper and deeper into the cave. Saphira decided it was best to stay behind her more violence capable friend but kept a light up in one hand while charging a simple flame spell in the other. After another long moment of silence the endrega emerged. Rushing right for them with its claws and poison tail readied.
The initial encounter could have gone better. Saphira shot her fire spell right away, the sudden light briefly blinded Kate who couldn’t see what the creature was doing. Though being on fire it wasn’t exactly great at aiming either. Kate stabbed her spear randomly trying to blink her vision back to normal. The tip clinked of the insectoid armor of the endrega but started to bite in as well. As did its front claws into Kate’s leg.
“FUCK, AAAHHH” Kate roared and brought the spear down hard on the things back while Saphira blasted it with another, better controlled, spell. The endrega screamed and flailed before going silent.
“Is? … Is it dead?” Saphira stammered.
“I think so” Kate said and shifted, “FUCK you got something for my leg. not deep but it hurts”
“Yes I do” Saphira hurried to apply an ointment, “I am so sorry… I.. I panicked when it showed up… Giant ugly bug”
“Well. you helped burn it with the next one…” Kate trailed off staring at their kill.
“What?”
“Hey saph… yu see that” Kate pointed, “Almost looks like its wearing a collar”
“What? no one can have a PET endrega. They are literal monsters.”
“I think it is a collar and… what.. whats that smell?”
The girls both sniffed. There was indeed an odd odor in the air, a sickly sweet smell that made their heads feel fuzzy.
Saphira shook her head, “ugh, is it the creature? this weird smell?”
“Dunno” Kate staggered to her feet, “Lets just grab it and get out of the cave”
The pair each grabbed onto part of the beast and started dragging. The smell continued to get worse as they went and with it the weird fuzzy feeling. Kate trudged slower and slower, then stopped entirely when she heard a soft ‘flump’ noise nearby.
“Wha…? who’s there” Kate turned groggily to see a passed out Saphira on the ground beside her, “Saphy.. saph, get up I.. what?”
The last thing Kate saw before she too lost consciousness was a pair of golden eyes peering at her form the darkness.
