Fun fact: French toast is likely named such because it's based on the French pain perdu, which was originally made with older, tougher bread and soaked in egg and milk to soften it back up before frying it. So unlike, say, french fries, French toast really does have its roots in France, although similar foods did also exist in Germany (where it was known as Arme Ritter) and the Roman Empire. Why am I sharing this useless trivia with you, aside from explaining why I capitalize French toast but not french fries? Because I thought it'd be a good lead-in to this: I'd like to teach you how I make perfect French toast, and how you can do it too!
Ingredients:
- 1 loaf of white bread
- 3/4 cup of milk
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder
- 1/4 tsp of sugar
- 1 tsp of vanilla extract
- Butter
- 1 bottle of table syrup
Recipe:
1. Break the eggs into a bowl and mix them together with a whisk.
2. Mix in the milk, cinnamon powder, sugar and vanilla extract.
3. Heat up a spoonful of butter in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
4. Dip a slice of bread into the finished mixture, making sure it's completely covered while being careful not to let it get too wet and break.
5. Place the bread onto the hot pan and let it cook for about 15 seconds.
6. Flip the bread over with a spatula and cook the other side for the same amount of time.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6.
8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 for each additional piece of toast you want to prepare.
9. Move the finished toast onto a plate and top each piece with butter and syrup.
And there you have it, a delightfully sweet addition to breakfast, brunch, breakfast-for-dinner, or even snacktime! That's the beauty of French toast, it's good for any time of the day! :3
