Same here! A well-made character will tell you their take and not the other way around, and will even upset your plans for them! (I still shudder at how one of my characters from an unfinished chapter of an old unfinished novel of mine decided to die instead of living. It was so graphic that I stopped writing then and there. Perhaps I should transcribe the chapter from the notebook and finish the novel/novella - a good project to tackle over the next week on vacation, wouldn't you say? )
