All bats in the setting have near vestigial wings, and all colonies of fruit bats all over the world have developed a phrase meaning something similar. For some "A dream of flying", for others "Missing nothing," and still others "Looking at stars on the horizon." No matter what phrase is used, it all means the same thing - a feeling of something missing in your life, something you never knew in the first place. Some bats never really notice it that much. Some bats indulge themselves in adrenaline activities to try to fill it. And some bats fall into fits of depression.

For Jorani, the pursuit of her magic provides her with a hope few other bats have - to actually fly, under her own power, through the night sky. She can't do it all the time - it takes too much power to be able to indulge in it every day - but for her, she misses something which she knows exactly how it feels.
