I live near the film site, Kaitoke regional park, and I can confirm it's breathtaking, although the mountains are much smaller in scale. This picture captures the immense size of Rivendell in the film.

Doesn't happen often, but my first thought, upon seeing the preview image for this in my in-box, was simply "wow". Impressive work! Is the scene based on a still from the movies?

I'm pretty sure it's more of a sweeping panoramic view. That then zooms in on that little gazebo where.. err.. what's her name (eragorn's potential elven wife) and Eragorn are talking about.. a thing I forgot.

Absolutely beautiful, but it makes me wonder... how many elves have accidentally slipped off that bridge into gaping jaws of the waterfall of death? Would a guard rail, like the one our fuzz boy is leaning on, have detracted that much from the view? Same goes for the stone tower with steep stairs where everyone meets periodically to discuss important things. How did Gandalf even make it up those things, yeesh!

Mercedes Lackey & I were at Weta w/Sir Richard Taylor the day the Rivendell gazebo roof elements were formed for the studio model. Lovely, simple process, too! This painting brings back fond memories of NZ, & of working on the films.
Alan Lee was there too, & I think he'd be as impressed as I am with your work. You're impressive!

Pfft.. Furry EDITION.. not addition. I should really proof read while tired.

and what i mean is they could.. potentially use the following.
Elf = Lynx (or other pointy ear cats) (for rivendell), Squirrel/chipmunk/sugar glider for the forest elves?
dwarf = Badger, Mole, possibly Bear.
hobbits = Squirrel. or chipmunk, rat, mouse, Meerkat?
humans = stay human? or ANY.. NO no no! HORSE! though horses riding horses... hrmm.. weird... not needed.. they can RUN and be the horse!
The orcs = Pigs? buffalo? cows?

Anyone with me after I expand on my thought?
