Ah yes. Stage one, AKA the "Why the fuck doesn't this work" stage.
Ive gotten the overall fur style down. pretty simple. I also did a really quick coloring job, But it will eventually be replaced. I just needed some kind of coloring. Also I didn't realize it at the time but its very easy to see that I grew the fur from a low polygon base mesh and not the higher polygon render version. I'm going to need to fix that. I also need to make the fur more... bold I guess is the word. I need to play around with the ambient/diffuse settings for that, But render times are long enough that I forget what I changed by the time I have to fix it.
I need to break the interpolation along the muscle ridges. I figure I put enough work into them that they should at least be visible.
But yeah... the first step in many.

Yup, rendering times is one reason why I kinda got bored of doing 3d. I had pretty fast machine at the time but waiting the render to complete was driving me nuts. No matter how much horsepower you have it's still too little.
I dunno how those pro's do it really... I guess they have developed a really good hunch how the material settings are supposed to be so it looks like how they want it to look like so they don't have to tweak and do test-runs.
Are you gonna do rigging and muscle-deformations or what are they called... so when you twist the arm the muscles work like they should, you know.. *doesn't know the proper terms*
