Coon only deliberated for about a week before she decided to leave Earth for a little over two Terran years to undergo boot camp training for the Avatian military on Narmu. The humans had helped the Sek establish there after their lifeboat ship had been found adrift without fuel, its crew in cryo-stasis for centuries. By completing the program, Coon became the first non-Sek to become a full Avatian citizen, a position she used to establish an embassy on Earth, the first of its kind between alien species.

Here we see her towards the end of her military training, probably scouting for viable caves that the Sek can use as homes. She is wearing the Naval dress uniform, so she is likely being accompanied by superiors assessing her skills; she wouldn't be wearing this during actual training (or much of anything really-the Sek are casual nudes most of the time, and Coon spent her years on their planet living as they do). Many would consider it strange to leave one's home planet in the hopes of integrating with another culture. Coon saw it as necessary.
