Another new dromaeosaurid to add to the family!
Dakotaraptor was one of the largest dromaeosaurids discovered so far along with utahraptor, austroraptor, and achillobator. While up there, it's built lighter and sleeker in comparison to species like utahraptor. Its figure represents more of that of a deinonychus on a much larger scale.
Its fossils were found in the Maastrichtian-age Hell Creek Formation, dated to the very end of the Cretaceous period, making it one of the last surviving dromaeosaurids known. Dakotaraptor would live in the same area and time as popular dinosaurs like tyrannosaurus, pachycephalosaurus, triceratops, edmontosaurus, and ankylosaurus. Other than the more well-known species there was also anzu, anatosaurus and thescelosaurus.
