Unusual combo, a shield and a shotgun.
Here's a small idea for your friend: if he used an extra-tall and thin heater shield with a pointed bottom and a lance rest (a small circular cutout in the dexter chief... er, I mean on the top right side of the shield, looking from the wielder's side) then he could spike it into the ground and use it simultaneously for cover and as a rifle rest.
