Well now, if you are a Disney enthusiest AND a Railfan and you don't reconize this set up or the name, you aught to be SLAPPED!!!
Yes, this is mostly likely going to be my first official On30 project! It is to be a 2x8ft On30 scale diorama of the famous "Grizzly Flats Railorad"! The "Prototype" was the conception of Ward Kimball, who was practically Walt Disney's right-hand-man and also one of the "9 Old Men". (Walt Disney's inner circle of creative masterminds)
I'm actually surprised that something like this hasn't been done before! And if it has I didn't know about it. Anyway, as you can see it's fairly simple, but for it's simplicity it will make up in the scale details! I want to create the most accurate representation of the Grizzly Flats facilities as possible, with the mind set that this was a real working railroad and not a glorified garden railway on steriods, like it was in actuallity.
The biggest detail challenge will be the two stub switches. I've been pondering on how to do it for quite some time. The once comprimise I made was that once the Right-of-Way passes the grade crossing the track curves gently. I wouls like to be able to connect this diorama to other layouts and modular set ups. Heck, I'd REALLY like to take this to a train show! Now wouldn't THAT be something! (Like the National Narrow Gauge Convention!) XD
And I won't just be modeling the track and structures. I intend to madel all three engines, #1 "Chloe", #2 "Emma Nevada", and #3 "Olomana", as well! And try to replicate alll the rolling stock as closely as possible in On30.
Well I hope you like it! I may do a color version, but don't hold me to it.
COMMENT IF YOU FAV PLEASE!!!!

The "Grizzly Flats Railroad" is an icon of the Disney world!! Although not directly involved with it.
Here, check it out!

Sadly the original Grizzly Flats RR is falling into dissaray. Most of the photos in the link are from the Orange Empire Railway Museum in California. The GFRR colection was donated to the museum after Ward Bimball's death. What makes me sad is that the "Emma Nevada" is not in operational condition. Shame to have such a historical loco that can't operate.
Well, most of the equipment went to the Orange Empire Railroad Museum, but the Pacific Coast caboose No.2 was donated to the California State Railroad Museum. It's on the second floor with the rest of the narrow gauge freight equipment, including Nevada Shortline No.2 (Nevada Central No.6). The depot was given to John Lasseter, after it was offered to the OERM but rejected due to it's size.
Well... I wouldn't call them "maps". ^^;
This took me between 45 minutes to an hour or so. It's fairly simple compared to some of my others.
It helps to become skilled in art in general. Those skills can be applied to designs and track plans such as this. The key thing though is Practice, Practice, PRACTICE!!!

Grrr... ill try to make this one the longest then, if its ok ;P
Just talking about random crap =p
Are u planning on making more maps any soon? And not only railway plans tho i liek em too =p Couse im thinking of makign a private server for an mmorpg and i would need some ORIGINAL ideas for maps, want to help? maybe? =p

What's that theme? Like what kind of time period/era. As you can see from my past work I like the 1800s. Personally I'd like to see a "Western" RPG or even better, a Steampunk one with a Westerns setting.
But I can work with virtually any theme. Just some thoughts I wanted to express.

Well, game is called FLYFF and its usual mmorpg. My still idea for my own version of the game is that i would make it with a completely different storyline to its original one. It would be in future but technology 'level' gone down from what we have now, but the magic skills gone up ;) (I sound stupid =p)
Ill send u full storyline i made if u want but i cant now as im on holiday stuck on my laptop with nothing but windows and firefox =p
Also, im planning on making characters to be anthros but it might be too hard.
Entire idea of my version is still just craps im putting all together and i know how to make server for my version already. I just need some software to edit game data and some ppl to help.
Im not 100% sure i will make it because as far as i know, the company who have game says its not legal while there is actually lists of top 100 private servers for this game public on net. I think its legal but just they dont want people to run away from official server and i know something about that already ;/ (Most people quit to private server after some time =p)
Well, overall im still open for ideas, and western is good =3
Sorry for writing alot but i cant sleep ;/
Thanks

You have me interested in the idea. And if your original concept doesn't pull through then I can help you with a new one. When you can, note me your basic idea(s) and summery of the story line.
And done't worry, you didn't write too much. I myself have writen essays for replys! Not intentionally though. ^^;

Well, i will pm u after i make this longest conversation through comments u had =p
And thanks for wanting to help, i really appreciate it. Only thing is that im stuck here for 2 weeks longer then it was planned so i didnt take all files i need to make my version of the game. Through this laptop sux =p
Thanks a lot again =3

I'm fairly new to the gaming crowd, so be warned, I don't know all the lingo yet. I've mostly been a platform gamer. My prefered system was the PS2. There is one PC game I FREAKING LOVE, but it's more like a Simulator. "Trainz Railroad Simulator" 2006 edition. It also has a terrific pert of the game called "Surveyor" which allows you to create your own railroad routes in any era or time period. There is also 50,000+ (and counting) additional downloadable items for the game! Virtually ANYTHING you can think of! When I still had a laptop I was working on a number of Trainz routes. My favorite being "Carbon Canyon", a Turn of the Century mining railroad in the desert southwest of the USA. Somewhere between California and Arizona.
The route was abslolutely epic looking! A good portion of the line was located on a river canyon's floor. The river had a steamship run up and down it and it stopped at a town called Carbon City. I was also starting to learn how to build my own content for the game using the "Gmax" 3D modeling program. I was learning to basic stuff before moving onto to modeling Locomotives and Rollingstock (railroad term for railroad cars) Then one day my laptop up nd fried on me. Just like that, POOF! It died, as well as everything I had on there. *sighes*
I hope I can find a job soon, I need to have a place of my own and a PC of my own.

Heh, essay =p Well, i heard of trainz but never played it, and i have a firend whos also loving it so dont worry =3
As you've learned to make OBJECTS that are more of environmental thing, u could help me out with modeling things like buildings, and well, we might need a railway route in ther3 ;3
Carbon canyon and city... isnt that form NFS carbon xP
*hugs* I know how bad it is to share a pc with ppl and how annoying it is when pc dies =,= i had to reinstall windows on this pc 5 times since i on holiday lol.
Well, i hope things will go on well, btw, how long left till this conversation beats ur longest one so far =p
Thanks,
~NuclearPaws

Well unfortuneately I can't model anything digitally right now. The PC I use is my mom's and she forbids me from doing anything on it. Aside from chack my mesages, E-mail, and what not.
I could easily come up with a map that features a railroad, obviously. *points to pic at top of page*
And IF we did such an enviornment I can also help with designing the train itself. I know enough about them that I can design them to be pheasable. Aka realistic, even though they are freelanced.
As for the name "Carbon Canyon", no I didn't get it from the game. I've never even played it, though I do want to. XD
As for how much longer this thread should last, I'm not entirely sure. ^^; I just know my longest was really REALLY long. *shrugs* ^^;
We can start PM-ing any time now, if you wish.

Aww, i hate laptops =p (Im on one atm)
PC are much better especially for modeling stuff etc. But modeling requires powerful machine. ;/
Just i if can know, How old are u? =p
And carbon canyon.... hmmm... where did u get that from then ? =p (I didnt thought its IRL place)
And we can pm but not yet, lets try to make this 'thread' a little bit longer, just so that the text area is so tiny that it will be hardly can have 1 word in 1 row =p
Thanks,
~NuclearPaws
P.S. IDK why i always end my messages like that, but i always do O.o

I am 22 years old and counting. I'll be 23 come this October.
Yeah, that's one reason I want a desktop. They're usually less espencive compared to a Lap top and they can process better and faster. I'd also like one with a quad core for optimal processing, which will help the performance of the Trainz game. It did alright on the laptop, to an extent, but I could put only so much scenery detail and then it would start getting glitchy/laging. (had lots of train wrecks due to lag...) ^^;
Good thing my "Carbon Canyon" route was in a desert enviornment. Less vegitation/details to take up memory. XD
In some random, but still train related news, I've started talking with guy involved with my hobby. Model railroading. He's shown interest in some of my modeling projects and he runs a business for making model kits in a specific model scale. (size of model train) There's a good chance some of my model designs may become kits for not only myself, but for other modelers to build! I'm not getting my hopes up, but I think it's something fun to think about! XD
As for how you end your messages, perhaps you've writen letters too often.

Nice, you are 22 years old =P (I wish i was over 18 =,=) Im 15 and 16 this October xDDDDDDDDDDDDD
I know, desktops beat laptops, but well, a good laptop could be better then desktop although still most desktops beat laptops. Quad core sound nice =3 I got quad core because i do a lot of video editing. I tried 3d modeling but its still outer-space for me. Im much more into messing around with adobe after effects =p. I recommend quad core because its just enough for home use. My friend got i7 (Wich as far as he told me is an 8 core but idk, and i cant find out if it really is) and well... he paid way too much and at most of things we do my desktop outcomes better =3 Only better thing he can do is run a lot more programs with no lags, But performance of it during massive multiple actions is worse then on mine =p (Not showing off just saying that quad core is fine)
I like deserts =p (and hate snow which is kind of weird for a husky i guess =p). And still, please tell me where did u get idea of carbon canyon =p
Its nice that your hobby of drawing will develop modeling =3 Im not that much into modeling but i will like to see some photos u should post if they really happen. Good luck in that =3
Letter hmm... i never written a real letter, but in school we learned about letters for like... 1 year O.o and they write a lot of different words at end and then comma and then name. And im usually thankful to everyone lol (weird i guess) Overall, thats all tbh=p
Thanks alot,
~NuclearPaws

When it comes to computers I'm glad I have connections. My former roommate has affered to build me my own PC for $500. AND it will have a terabite of memory at least! XDXDXDXD Couple that with a quad core set up and it's a really good deal. Or I think it is anyway.
And is your B-day Oct. 16th? If it is, so is mine! Ain't that a quinky-dink! XD
As for the concept of "Carbon Canyon", I'm not entirely sure where the insparation came from. Needless to say I am a HUGE train fanatic. I take particular likeing to what's called "Narrow Gauge". I guess I should give you a breif lesson on railroads first though.
The term "Gauge" in railroading means the measured distance between the rails on railroad track. There are 3 basic catagories: "Standard Gauge", it's like the "Default" kind pf track and it's width, or "Gauge", never changes. It is always measured as 4ft 8.5in. "Broad Gauge" is track that is wider than standard gauge. Some railroads have had track as wide as 9ft between the rails! And finally there is my personal favorite, "Narrow Gauge", wich is anything track that is LESS that 4ft 8.5in. There were countless kinds of narrow gauge railroads, but there were three kinds of "NArrow Gauge" that were the most popular. Form smallest to widest, there's 2ft gauge, 30in gauge, and 3ft gauge.
3ft gauge was the most poular out of them all and was widely used around the world. In the state of Colorado, in the USA, used to have one of the most exstencive 3ft narrow gauge railroad networks in the world. At one point there was more that 1,000 miles of 3ft narrow guage railroads all linked together. Now there are only three or so portions of it left. All of which are for tourist operations.
Anyway, "Narrow Gauge" was VERY popular umong mining and industria railroading. I love the Colorado narrow gauge railroads, they have a very unique and charming character to them. And when it came to modeling/building routes for the Trainz game I mostly focused there. Eventually though I saught a change of pace.
At the time a guy by the name of Ben Neal, a modeler of locomotives for the Trainz game, released some new 30in gauge locomotives. They also have a very "dusty" appeaence of hard working engines. I could easily imagine them hauling ore trains while in the desert mountains in the American Southwest. Hauling either Gold, Silver, or even Copper. (Arizona was a HUGE producer of copper in the 1800s and continues to today)
I guess I wanted to make a route with a little more of a "Western" feel. Like something roight out of a movie, almost. That may have been the insparation. As for the Canyon and the town itself, completely out of my own imagination.
As for the real life scale models, I can garuntee that I'll post pictures. I have a few photos of some of my current models posted in my gallery. As well as a few shots of a small desert diorama in HO scale.

ah 1tb =p
And mines at 22 October =3
1tb =p i got 750gb and after 6 months its already full O.o
Thanks for education on gauge-s =p I know what u mean by them, i was into trains stuff when i was younger. No time now, and in city all railway is on hills or behind big fences.
Well, else from that idk what to say atm =p Im kind of tired as its night here.
Thanks

Oh, my bad... I thought you said your birthday is on the 16th. ^^;
I've been into trains for as long as I can remember. Steam trains were always my favorite and remain so. I would do more with them model wise if it weren't for my finacial situation. I still like to plan out future projects though.

I wish i had money to do what im interested in =p but $1k - $2k for adobe cs4 is a bit too much O.o
Your pans are nice, and indeed realistic. Keep ur god work up =3

P.S. I tried editing actual game yesterday after i replayed to u, and well... im failing T_T. I need to look up for code most of this things are writen in, and changing game theme is just pain T_T (But i know its possible) =p

I'm afraid that it's not very large. I was only meant to service one or two "large" locomotives, such as the "Emma Nevada".

Or smaller engines like Porters.

Hmmm... That was quite interesting! I may refer to that video time to time in the future. The one thing I know for certain is that in a stub switch the rails are litterally "bent" into allignment. (hence forth the old railraod term "Bending the iron")
There are a few YAHOO! groups I have a membership to that are all about old time narrow gauge modeling. I may drop them a line and see if I can get some help/advice.
