So yeah, I picked up Dragon Quest IX recently and discovered that you can make your character appear pretty much any way you desire. Height and build, gender, facial features, eye and hair color, skin tone, and so on... so I decided to do what I used to do all the time as a kid and do my team based on my real life friends and myself.
This is my character, currently a Warrior (though I've done a bit with Paladin class once I got it unlocked. It was ridiculously easy to do so). He's basically a balance between offense and defense. Gladiator class is the offensive one whereas Paladin leans more towards protecting yourself and your buddies.
As for why I'm the hero...
Because its my goddamn copy of the game. Thats why. :D

I'm not certain, but I think its the endgame. Mind you there's some quests, like finding the dancing master in the Plains, that you can't do until after the castle.
Protip: When you first enter the Castle go east and check all the bookcases. One of them has the sidequest for the all powerful Sage class.

Mind you I dunno either. I tried poking through my defeated monster list to see if I had b*tchslapped a few and just forgot... but I couldn't find them listed. Try sailing around to the smaller islands, sometimes its one of those little islets that you pass and totally ignore because its just a speck of land way out away from everywhere.
