I was going to post just the base colors but got the urge to at least shade the fur. I think it is a good start. Need a few more highlights and it should really come to live. Then I'll texture the nosepad and complete the eyes to complete the foreground.
I am still at odds with the background however. One person suggested using a library with all the books. If I am going with that, I am thinking of doing rows of books on shelves and then give it a slight blur to give the illusion of depth of field.
But I am open to other ideas (if I get any). Something different than my usual cloudy skies.
So, am I making good progress? Anything that seems off?

I noticed a few swords in your gallery. An after battle scene perhaps? Maybe that would be too serious. Hmmmm.
Eccitaze had a few idea, see what you think of any of them. I am leaning toward a space adventure but not sure if that fits your character. That'll certainly stretch my meager skills but that could be good for me.

Bit of constructive criticism:
It looks sorta flat right now. That's a problem I've noticed you tend to have when you draw, and I think conquering that would get you past one of your biggest hurdles. I'm not an artist myself, but I do know that one really good way to add depth is through the use of shadows. Adding a darker-colored brushstroke at, say... the point where the eye and the muzzle meet would go a long way to adding depth.
The other thing I noticed is that the eyes are a little off. The left one is tilted up a little higher than the right one, and the eyes have weird shapes--they start out narrow and flare out into a circle, and then don't narrow down into a tip at the end.
The irises look good, although the eyes look like they're not focused on anything. It's like the character's expression right now is a blank stare.
The last thing is that the neck appears a bit wide right now. Judging by your previous WIP, it looks like you added fur as a first layer. Again, I'm not an artist, but IIRC most artists do a "skeleton" layer as the first sketch, getting the anatomy down and then adding fur and details.
There's a lot of potential, and I'm sure that a lot of the issues I brought up is stuff you know about and are going to fix in later WIPs. I look forward to the finished version! :D

I haven't done my final shadow and highlight layers. Those usually gives it the depth it needs. I usually do that after slapping on some sort of background so I can add shadows to that as well. Right now I only have one shade and highlight layer over the base colors. I sometimes end up with several separate layers before I am done. I been known to got into dozens, even over a hundred layers. However, this one is fairly basic so I should end up with less than dozen.
I did notice the eyes are not on the same level and will be east to fix as I put the eyeballs on a layer below the face. I am thinking of shifting the iris inward a little. The narrowing I got off my photo ref, though I can tame it up some. The eyes themselves look flat since I didn't put those white 'glare' dots on yet. Plus I need to put a hint of the capillaries. And with some shading around edge should give it a rounded appearance.
Another thing I noticed is the right shoulder seems too narrow. I plan to add some more meat to it on the back part. That will give is a beefier look. I made the neck itself a bit wide as hyenas do have that 'humpback' look. This is based on the pictures of real hyenas I found on Google.
I hope to give the eyes and nosepad to look similar to this http://www.furaffinity.net/full/1692642/ . I feel I can to do better fur now but that remains to be seen.
On this drawing, the fur is in two layers above the base color layer. I put the fur shade layer first on top of the base color and then the highlights above that. I do 'feather' the base colors (I love abusing the smudge tool indeed).
Once I get the base color down, I place the shade layer with it set to multiply. This allows me to darken the image. Then I put a highlight and set that layer to divide (I use GIMP), which not only lightens the colors but to shift to 'brighter' colors (that is how I can describe it) instead of just lighter. I love that effect as I don't need to use a bunch of colors and saves me tons of work.
Maybe I can do another one flash slideshow of how I add the layers but the one I made previously seemed to got lost. Only one person commented on it, ironically the one I am drawing. I was hoping it would help people out but not sure if it did.
Oh, before I go, do you have any ideas for the background. I suck at those and need some ideas of what to do there. I really don't want to resort to using a stock photo if I can avoid it. I might have to run with that library idea someone gave earlier. But I like to look at other options as well before committing myself.

Hrrm... You could just texture the background a bit to give it that "Professional portrait studio" theme. Another idea could actually be a space theme in the background--give the picture an "Out of this World" look, or a sci-fi feel.
Or you could draw a train barreling straight towards him, lol.
Hell, maybe have your character in the background eyeing him?
Just a few ideas.

A textured background is an idea t have in mind and simple to do. But seems a little too generic to me.
Yeennnnnnnnaaaaaaaaaaaaas in spaceeeeeeeeee! Hmmmm, inside a space side with a window in the back with the view of earth in it. That'll be a challenge but an interesting idea none the less.
Dunno about the impending train wreck. Doesn't fit of any of the themes I am looking for. Although I can be a such a silly dragon at times, I want to keep this one on the serious side (to match his expression). Maybe if I drew that wide eyed surprised look.
If I was in background with that stare, I would believe he would be running away screaming. I have that effect many times even though I am a nice dwaggie... when I want to be. I guess you never heard of my reputation. Hehe
Zolen stated he is more of a hero character. Maybe that space theme might work here as a modern day hero doing a space rescue or something. But I don't know if I can pull that off. I still have plenty of time to explore these ideas so keep them coming. I am bound to find one that fits perfectly.
