The following chapter contains DiD. Digimon Tamers its characters are properties of Toei Animation.
There it was again.
Rika suddenly began shivering slightly. She could see her own breath in the form of a faint little cloud of fog. She wrapped her arms around each other, trying to keep walking down the halls of the station as if nothing was out of the ordinary. She kept on her guard, while maintaining as level a demeanor as she could.
All while Renamon stood and watched vigilantly, keeping out of her tamer's line of sight. She kept her eyes focused and narrowed, peeking out from around corners, tensing her long legs to be ready to spring at the first clear sign of danger.
For the past few days, Rika was being followed. By whom or what, nobody knew yet. It could possibly be a Digimon, possibly something else. Whatever it was, it appeared ice-like in nature, given the cold effects that signaled its presence. It could also apparently appear and disappear as it pleased, meaning Rika was unsafe whenever she was isolated.
Neither she nor Renamon knew what it wanted with her, but it was unlikely anything good.
So, Rika asked her partner to investigate and try to uncover the mystery. The Digimon did her best, but came up empty-pawed much to her disappointment. As such, worried and wanting to be of some use, she asked that she herself follow Rika, as a form of protection to ensure the mysterious figure could not take her. At least not without Renamon's knowledge.
However, much to her surprise, Rika refused. She claimed that she didn't need such protection, even from her own partner. She instead insisted that Renamon merely keep searching and leave her be, keeping herself off the radar of this strange creature.
Renamon of course attempted to argue back. She tried to make Rika understand that they didn't know what they were up against and that she was vulnerable without her. Yet the child would not hear it, even getting slightly intense in her adamant refusal.
Renamon had forgotten how prideful Rika could be. And how suggesting she was dependent on another greatly bruised that pride.
... At least, Renamon assumed that was the reason.
As a result, the loyal Digimon had taken to following Rika in secret.
Her ability to teleport across non-digital matter was of great use. It allowed her to keep up with Rika from area to area, even when no path was available for her to remain out of her sight. She didn't feel good about denying Rika her privacy, but nonetheless persisted, slinking through the town and standing watch over her as the silent guardian she was meant to be.
Throughout the duration of her surveillance, though, the icy figure had not made any appearance until now. Whether or not that was because it knew of the presence of the human's protector, Renamon didn't know. But his absence was not only welcome for Rika's safety, but it kept the risk of her finding out about Renamon's deeds at practically zero.
Unfortunately, that streak came to an end once a tall, skinny, phantom-like figure phase in behind Rika.
And as soon as she saw him reach out its long, spindly fingers towards the unsuspecting girl, Renamon instantly took action.
She leapt out from her position to reveal herself, sprinting forward and springing her body off the floor. With her momentum still going and a fearsome fire in her eyes, the vixen extended her legs out, preparing to deliver a powerful kick to the unknown assailant.
But he then turned his head.
And after flashing her a hateful, resentful stare at her, he faded away into nothing before she could hit him.
Renamon ended up kicking the wall as a result. Absorbing the impact, she pushed off it with her feet to backflip into a guarded standing position.
She held her hands up and looked around rapidly. Turning her body in every direction, she kept herself tense in case the figure popped back up again. But not a trace remained of him; even the cold air that signified his presence had seemed to evaporate.
He got away.
Renamon felt her fists tighten further as she let out a grunt of frustration.
"Renamon?!"
Oh. Right. Now she had to face her tamer.
"What are you doing here?!"
Her posture still rather rigid, the yellow Digimon turned to look upon the girl, whose face was slowly contorting in realization.
"Were ... Were you following me?" she asked indignantly.
There was no real way to hide it. So Renamon simply sighed with slumped shoulders.
"Rika, you're not safe right now," she tried to keep things calm. "Someone needs to make sure that creature is kept at bay."
Rika just scoffed in annoyance as she crossed her arms. "Until now, I haven't seen him at all! You're worrying over nothing, I'm fine!"
Renamon's blue eyes, usually so sure and unwavering, suddenly took on an uncharacteristic expression of guilt. She looked away, trying to quickly recover and hide the tell.
But Rika had noticed. And she then realized just why she hadn't seen her would-be assailant.
"Wait ... How long have you been ..."
The vulpine Digimon said nothing. Her posture remained still, her arms flat against her sides and her head hung low.
That told Rika all she needed to know.
"I thought I told you not to worry about me! Seriously, you've been watching me this whole time?! Wherever I went?!"
Renamon's white foot took one step forward. "Rika, please. You don't know what-"
"No!" Rika shouted. "Leave me alone!"
She turned and ran off, not caring that her Digimon could easily catch up to her if she tried.
But Renamon didn't try. She just kept facing the floor, deep in thought.
In a way, she understood Rika's frustration. It was never easy to admit when you needed help, especially for her. Renamon herself wasn't too much different; she still carried shame from any instance where she had been beaten, subdued, even captured, and in need of saving by someone else.
Despite being Digimon and human, it still surprised her at times how alike they were.
The fox took her strides forward, not rushing to catch up to Rika. The girl had run off into a stairway that would take her to a crowded portion of the subway station, meaning her mysterious stalker had no chance of nabbing her undetected. Plus, she had come to the station in the first place to meet up with Takato, so at least she wouldn't be alone once she found him.
Renamon entered the stairway, concealing her from most onlookers in the station. Before making her way down, she leaned a spiked shoulder against a wall, crossing her arms and legs as she pondered the situation further.
Despite knowing how prideful Rika was, Renamon still didn't get why she was so adamant about this. It wasn't like she had ever solely fought a Digimon herself; that was clearly Renamon's initial duty to her. She thought the two of them had made strides in trusting each other as more than just battle partners, but as friends as well. Did that not oblige them to look after each other?
Would Rika not be doing the same thing had the roles been reversed?
It was troubling to think about. And Renamon feared pushing the issue further and bringing back some of the distance between them.
She let out another sigh ...
... But this time, she could see her own breath when it came out.
Just as Renamon's face shot up in surprise with a gasp, she suddenly felt two sets of long, strong fingers wrap around her arms. The cold air around her intensified, and she grunted as the hands squeezed tightly.
Then a voice spoke. One as cold as the brisk air around him.
"Since you're so persistent in keeping after her, let's have her come to you."
Before Renamon even had a chance to fight back, she was fading out of the stairway, yanked back into some unknown location.
Little did either of them know that the act had not gone completely unseen ...
"Augh!"
Renamon grunted loudly as, mere seconds after being taken from that station, she was tossed violently onto the floor of some new environment. She slid on her side along what was apparently an icy ground.
As she used her claws to slow herself, she could see that she was in a cave made entirely of ice. Huge swaths of it completely made up the walls, ceiling, halls, and floor, all forming some sort of spherical lair. Icy stalactites and stalagmites served as rugged decorations to complete the look of the dark-blue-and-white cavern.
She then shakily lifted her head to look at the attacker, finally getting a solid look at the being that had caused her such worry.
As she'd seen earlier, it was a very tall, white Digimon. One she could now recognize as an IceDevimon. She saw those elongated arms, and fingers that served doubly as claws, the same that had snatched her into his realm. Atop his head were devil's horns that felt all too fitting for a being like him, as were the tattered white wings, skull on one shoulder and one knee, sinister purple insignia on his chest ...
And most of all, the deep, violet eyes and light grin that were nothing short of heartless.
Renamon was enraged, both by this figure's attempts against her tamer and by this current abduction. She slowly got back up onto her feet with a low, nearly inaudible growl, though IceDevimon failed to react whether he heard it or not.
The foxy Digimon's footpaws levitated inches off the slippery ground. Her paws glowed blue as they crossed over her chest, before she spread her arms for another signature Diamond Storm towards her new opponent.
But IceDevimon was motionless still. He merely breathed out a thick, heavy cloud of cold fog that quickly solidified into a protective wall. The diamonds collided into this instead, emitting sharp clinking sounds before falling limp onto the floor.
He then emitted a force from his long-clawed hands that propelled the ice wall straight towards the vixen as she was descending.
It was too fast and large to dodge. Renamon brought her arms up to her face to shield herself, but it did little to cushion the impact of it crashing into her. It still kept flying back, pushing her with it.
She let out a loud gasp of pain when she was crushed and slammed against the back wall of the frigid cave, vicious vibrations wracking her entire body.
The force was brutal and left her in a daze, barely able to register anything. All she could feel was something forming around both her wrists, which had ended up above her head upon the impact.
By the time she got her bearings back, she attempted to lunge forward at IceDevimon ... only to be yanked back by her arms, her legs and waist flailing up.
Looking up, Renamon's eyes flared when she saw that what could only be described as cuffs of ice had formed on the wall and around her arms. They each started at the wrist and coated a majority of her purple-clad forearms, locking them to the wall behind her.
IceDevimon's sneer grew even wider as he unloaded another blast of bristling cold breath at her. This time it went for her legs, still slightly dangling. When it hit, more ice began forming around them, covering her feet and going up to the knees. It solidified and became part of the wall, just like her arm cuffs.
As a result, she found all four of her limbs now trapped and unusable.
Renamon growled and tugged her body, but was disheartened to see how it did absolutely nothing. The ice was clearly not brittle by any means; it was as cold as it got, and thus as solid and sturdy as it could possibly be. It was so thick that it completely concealed her body in bluish, frosty white where it bound it.
Worse yet, it was tight. So much so that the extreme cold was biting into the thick yellow fur on her firm legs, which twitched and pulled in response. She even found herself shivering a little, though it was hard to notice amidst her futile struggling.
Now that she was effectively secured in place, the foul IceDevimon walked forward, deciding to finally begin the "formalities".
"I must say, I was expecting a bit more from you ... though not much," he spoke. "If you were so persistent on keeping me from the girl, surely you'd put up at least a somewhat passable fight."
Renamon's face curled into a snarl as she twisted her arms in their new bonds. Her chest fur bristled and her exposed upper legs and waist strained in the uncomfortable ice.
"If that's what you wanted, why the restraints?" she retorted. Her voice was slightly shaky due to the cold pressing into her, but her tone was firm nonetheless.
The icy captor merely snickered. "Clearly her sharp tongue is rubbing off on you."
Once he finally reached the pinned fox, IceDevimon grabbed and lifted her chin in his spindly fingers. She tried to resist, but they only dug further into her face.
"I look forward to more of it once I finally have her for myself."
Renamon lunged forward again. Obviously she got nowhere, grunting as the ice's persistent hold kept her in place, her back smacking against the wall.
"Stay away from her!" she spat. "She'll never bow to your-mmmgph!"
More cold air formed in the middle of her rant, this time around her mouth. Renamon tilted her head back to stop it, but it did no good as the ice easily solidified over the lower half of her face, effectively gagging her. It pinned her head to the wall, and brought the terrible freezing sensation directly to her furry face.
"I'm speaking. You just listen."
"Mmrrgph!"
"I have no intentions of giving her up," IceDevimon continued. "That girl has shown cold, merciless resolve, the likes of which I've yet to see from a tamer so young ... Resolve that makes her the perfect match for a being like me."
Renamon seethed through her nose, the breath fogging up as it hit the ice. She twisted her arms and wrists, thrusting her slender middle from side to side as groans of discomfort escaped her blocked mouth.
"She understands, as I do, that the path to glory requires no compassion. No warmth. Only the cold heart that takes what it wants and burns all bridges thereafter."
He took several steps back and gestured upward, inviting Renamon to do the same. Though her gag limited her head position, her eyes darted up to see what he was referencing.
"Or in my case ... freezes all bridges."
"Hmmmh!!"
Horror flooded Renamon's frozen face when she saw, within several of the larger stalactites of ice, entombed, frozen Digimon. Their expressions of shock, pain, and raw terror were completely locked in place, along with the rest of their bodies.
"With each opponent slain, my power grows," IceDevimon said. "Such is the nature of us Digimon warriors."
"Mmrrphnrr! Rmrnnphrm nnnh!?" Renamon tried to cry out in rage at this monster, but the ice sealed up all words. She pulled her arms in their bonds again, straining to her limits. She twisted left to right with what limited movement was available to her, toned legs bobbing up and down as they tugged to escape.
Her shuddering breathing intensified as she realized just what kind of cruel beast she was at the mercy of.
"Oh, don't be so melodramatic," IceDevimon mocked in a condescending tone. "I would instead worry for your own life ..."
His smile widened. "After all ... once I bring her here, she will condemn you to that same fate ..."
With that, the ice Digimon faded away, leaving Renamon alone in this cold, cavernous lair.
"Rrrrmmghh!!"
The vixen Digimon fought with all her might to get herself free of the ice. No matter what she did, it wasn't budging one single bit, nor showing any signs of cracking, proving more durable and firm than the strongest of hardened cement. She stretched her legs as much as possible, but could feel herself nearly tearing her lean muscles as the ice just scraped against them. She tried to bang her fists against the back wall, maybe somehow dislodging herself off or something, but there was barely any room. Not that it seemed like that would matter.
But fighting it only served to send more harsh shivers of the cold sensation through her pinned body. Her bright blue eyes winced and she moaned, as she could have sworn the ice was actually getting tighter, forming even more underneath to compress her further.
But it didn't stop her.
I can't let this happen! With me out of the way, he'll easy get-
"Hmmph!!" The fox's thoughts were interrupted when she felt motion at her legs.
She looked down, and gasped through her nose when she saw that the ice that had so firmly encased the sleek limbs ... was in fact moving.
Not just moving, but spreading. More of it crawled around her thighs to further coat her in the cold. The protrusions in the substance weaved through her bright yellow fur, sometimes scraping against her skin, causing her to moan.
New formations also came to encase her waist and shoulders, somehow remaining as tight as ever and pinching her ever-squirming form.
Renamon felt herself shivering to an even greater degree. It was as if the ice was actually biting her, sending its brittle cold into her very veins. Her fur stood up, her tail going rigid still pinned against her. As her legs came closer to being completely coated in ice, she felt them simultaneously going numb and screaming in agony from the horrid temperature, the same as the rest of her body. Her shoulders felt just as terrible, and even her gloves couldn't stop it from reaching her forearms.
S-So ... cold ... How??
Just then, in the midst of her struggling, the same presence that had left her minutes ago faded back in, returning to his home.
But trapped in his slinky hands, her upper body wrapped in his fingers ... was Rika!
"Rrnghn!!" Renamon shouted.
"Renamon!!"
IceDevimon chuckled at the two partners' screams. He felt Rika thrash and yank herself in his grasp, desperate to go help her captive friend. But IceDevimon just wrapped his fingers tighter around her, causing her to kick her feet out with a shriek.
"Let me go!!" Rika screamed. "Let her go!!"
"Mrm mmrrmph!!" Renamon roared into the gag, trying to pull her body forward to no avail. She was only rewarded with a new surge of stinging cold shooting through her, as the ice continued to crawl over her.
"Please, girl, calm yourself," the captor uttered, far too coolly considering the situation. "I don't wish to harm you. Quite the opposite, actually ..."
He held her up higher to whisper in her ear.
"I'm here to give you everything you want."
"Then put me down and go melt in a fire!" Rika shot back.
Another snicker from the icy creature, one just as chilling as the makeup of his home.
Time to digivolve, Renamon thought.
Now that her partner was in her presence, such a thing was possible. How could IceDevimon have made such a critical error?
... Except as soon as she tried, Renamon felt such freezing, searing pain flare up intensely throughout her entire body. A cold so overwhelmingly unbearable that it burned, as if she was being coated in dry ice on the inside and out, simultaneously crushing her skin and flowing through her digital blood!
It caused her to scream into her gag as she convulsed relentlessly, ears pressed against her skull, unable to take the agony. "RRRMMPH!!!"
What's happening?! What is this?!!
"Ah yes, you'll find your tomb has some ... special side effects," IceDevimon said in response to her turmoil. "You're going nowhere, you measly rodent."
"What are you doing to her!?" Rika screeched. "Let us go!!"
But this Digimon seemed scornful, maybe even oblivious, to the emotional plight of the human he held, and the vixen fighting tooth-and-nail to digivolve. It was becoming increasingly clear that something as instinctual and universal as concern for a friend was foreign to him, and that made it more apparent than ever how dangerous he was.
"There's no need to be upset, Rika," he said. "This is what I've come to show you ... You see, I want you as my partner."
"WHAT?!!"
"Mmrm nnnmgh!!" Renamon grunted. She had to give up her efforts to transform; the ice's reaction was far too great for her to withstand.
Nonetheless, it was still not allowing her total reprieve. She still felt the throbbing pain of fresh new icy bursts. It kept her constantly heaving through her nose, especially as the ice kept spreading a little further around her body, now completely covering her lower half.
"I have surpassed your current Digimon in every way," IceDevimon proclaimed. "Strength, power, capabilities, intelligence. And I wish to share that superiority with you. Me, one of the coldest, mightiest Digimon, combining forces with you, one of the coldest, mightiest up-and-comers in the tamer world ..."
He turned Rika around to look into her wide, frightened eyes.
"Together, we shall be unstoppable. And as my first show of strength ..."
He turned her back to face Renamon. "I will let you watch your inferior Digimon perish, as her data becomes mine."
As he finished, the ice binding Renamon moved again.
She moaned in distress as it went further up her torso, the icicles digging into her fur and poking at her skin, accompanied by new surges of frost flaring up throughout her form. The ice soon slowed down, but kept moving. It now brushed up against clumps of her thick chest fur, which was bobbing up and down in frantic yet still beautiful motions.
IceDevimon then finally tossed Rika down, knowing she could do nothing for the entrapped Renamon.
Nonetheless, the girl immediately sprinted over to her partner, heaving in a panic and trying not to slip over on the ice.
She banged on Renamon's prison with as much power as her tiny frame could muster, ignoring the ache it sent through her fists. She kicked at it, stomping and throwing her entire weight into it to bust it down with her shoulder. She was even desperate enough to grasp at it with her finger tips and try to scrap and rip it apart.
It was about as successful as expected. If her Digimon couldn't break it, what chance did she stand?
"Stop this!!" she ordered as she relentlessly kept trying to free the fox. "I will never join you! Just let her go!!"
Rika couldn't see it, but IceDevimon's face contorted in genuine confusion. As if someone had just told him something as nonsensical and backwards as him actually being made of fire.
"You ... will not? My child, I'm afraid I don't understand. You wish to be the best, yes? You've expressed no qualms with stepping over others to do so. I am showing myself to match those same principles."
The continued pitch was falling on deaf ears. Rika's one and only focus was getting Renamon out of this! Renamon looked down at her, squirming at the same time in some vain attempt to work with her, despite knowing full well that even their combined efforts weren't breaking this extremely thick ice.
"I have shown myself to be better than your current partner," IceDevimon stated. "What possible reason could you have to deny me?"
"Hrrrm-rmm ..." Renamon growled and shivered. The ice was spreading still. It navigated and explored each nook and cranny of the rich, white little forest of fur on her chest, before more of it came to coat it over completely.
She began to feel herself growing weaker from the overwhelming temperature that only got lower and lower in and on her body.
IceDevimon would not have been wrong in anything he was saying ... months ago. Rika was a girl who sought dominance. Rika was a girl who saw her Digimon as nothing but a data packet, someone who may have abandoned Renamon for a better Digimon. And the sad memories of this were not pleasant for the yellow fox to relive.
Now, however, Rika had grown to be more than that. And she had grown to be more than just an emotionless partner to Renamon.
As she made clear now.
"Because she's my friend!" Rika affirmed, fists clenched at her side. She stared down IceDevimon and pointed firmly at him. "And you're just a savage who kills to get ahead!"
"And you are not?!" IceDevimon responded.
His voice was rising now. The way he carried himself was becoming less assured. The response he was getting from Rika was far, far different from what he had been so sure he would get. What he had been so looking forward to. "Child, what has gotten into you? Do you not hear yourself? A friend?! You actually feel something for this weakling?!"
Renamon felt herself struggling more and more just to breathe, as the ice traveled up what little of her arms had been uncovered beforehand. It now coated her neck as well, rising up to join with the block of ice serving as her gag.
Beneath the sheets, she could feel the solidified water grow tighter, pressing further and further into her as if it itself were alive.
It felt like she was being crushed to death by a train, at the bottom of the coldest waters of the Artic.
She could barely struggle at all now. Not just because her squirming, tugging fists were the only things capable of moving - even her tail was frozen now, unable to budge like most of her body - but because her digital blood was being rendered paralyzed, slowing down in response to the overpowering chill binding and gagging her.
IceDevimon yanked Rika away from Renamon, grabbing her by the neck and bringing her face right to his.
"Nngh!" Rika cried.
"Rn-Rnghm!!" Renamon shouted, awkwardly from the intense shaking wracking what little was still exposed of her.
"Where's that tough child I had heard so much about?!" IceDevimon's harsh breath sent a chill down Rika's spine. "Where's the partner I've craved, who would toss aside anyone who proved to be a failure, who bred her Digimon to be just as cold as her?!"
Rika gasped and choked out her words as the evil Digimon's grip on her neck tightened.
"Renamon ... ack ... will never be like - gnh! - like you ..."
She kicked out at him, but not only was she too small to reach, but she had to struggle just to get in any air through her strangled neck.
"No ..." IceDevimon said lowly. "She will not."
He turned Rika around to look at her frozen, withering Digimon.
"Because I've far surpassed her."
The ice gagging Renamon then began to move. She tried to crane her head back, but it was already locked in place.
It would only be delaying the inevitable anyway. For within seconds, the cold, hard substance ended up covering her nose.
"Mmmhh!!"
With how thick the ice had gotten, Renamon's already-muffled cries were now made almost totally inaudible. She couldn't make a sound, she couldn't move an inch, she couldn't breathe ... and she could feel the thorough crushing and painful freezing prepare for its final bout.
She tried to wriggle around, tried to resist the encasement that was inching its way up to her frightened, furious eyes and folded ears. But her craned neck was stuck, her entire body was stuck ... there was no escape.
And soon enough, the rest of her head fell victim to the terrible ice.
"... mmr-mm-nmh ......"
It would be mere minutes, maybe less, before she succumbed completely and met her icy end.
She couldn't hear her partner's cries under her tomb, nor see through the thick, white material. She couldn't feel anything outside its walls either.
As she went numb and her heartbeat slowed, she was seconds away from feeling nothing at all. Forever.
She'd felt the humiliating sensation of fear before. But this ... this was as bad as it got.
"And now, you'll see that she's obsolete," IceDevimon affirmed with pure malice.
"NO!!!" Rika screeched.
She knew this would happen! She knew that if Renamon kept protecting her, whatever threat they were facing would come after her directly!
Why couldn't she have just listened?!
"Enough tears!!" IceDevimon roared into her ear, noticing the wet streaks falling down her cheeks. "You will stop this foolishness right now, or join her in death!" He throttled her further, causing her to spill more tears.
"You're mine now!! And together, we will be-"
So caught up was he in his fury, his desperate need to prove himself and get through to the stubborn Rika ... that IceDevimon had failed to notice the Digimon that had rushed into his lair.
Until he rammed right into him.
Rika grunted as she fell to the ground, out of IceDevimon's hold, barely able to register this sudden turn of events before her.
Guilmon had arrived, with Takato right behind him. He hadn't wasted a single second charging into action, not giving IceDevimon the slightest chance to even defend himself.
The dinosaur-like Digimon suddenly sprouted wings, courtesy of a Digi Modify combo from Takato. They glowed a bright white as he grabbed IceDevimon and flew him up into the air. The impact from the initial ramming was enough to momentarily daze the icy Digimon, and his limbs flailed as he was flown higher and higher.
Until Guilmon was able to violently thrust his head into the ceiling, trapping it in place and leaving him to dangle.
IceDevimon's whole body shuddered and vibrated as he screeched out, lashing out his limbs blindly at his new attacker.
"YOU INSOLENT CREATURE!!" he shouted, his voice now muffled. "YOU DO NOT HUMILIATE ME IN FRONT OF MY TAMER!!"
But Guilmon was ready to do much worse than humiliate.
"Finish him off!" Takato ordered.
Still airborne, the Digimon did just that. He unleashed one of his classic Pyro Spheres straight at IceDevimon.
To say the hit was devastating would be an understatement. The impact, power, and especially heat of the bright orange ball of fire, all came together as the perfect combination of elements to blow the sinister Digimon's body to bits.
Each part of him fell, one piece at a time. Yet none even hit the slippery floor before it evaporated into a red mist of heat.
Guilmon still floated with limbs outstretched, as IceDevimon's data flowed into him, building up his strength from the kill.
And just like that, with the Digimon behind the icy lair now perished, the abode itself began to fade away entirely.
Including the ice that had fully encased the helpless Renamon.
It took a second for the vixen to register that she had been freed, it only hitting her when she felt her knees touch down onto solid ground. She wanted to catch herself, but was far too numb, and so her arms remained limp as she then fell onto her side.
She was shuddering heavily as she took in as much air as her traumatized body could. Her chest gradually started to rise and fall as the pain and frigid temperature left her little by little. Her breath was still visible, but she could feel her insides warm up, and told herself to keep steady now that her plight had passed.
She was grateful to have the ground beneath her go from ice to concrete. As it turned out, the lair had been a giant sphere of ice set up on the roof of a building downtown. As the last of it faded away, the four remaining individuals found themselves on that roof, everything suddenly looking normal again ... or as normal as their lives could be called at this point.
"Renamon!" Rika called out. "Are you okay?!"
Renamon forced her body, despite the strain, to bring itself back onto her knees. She was still hunched over, though; she wrapped her arms around herself, still shivering from the residual cold and clenching her teeth as she forced her eyes to remain open.
Takato and Guilmon watched in worry, as Rika rushed over to her partner's side.
"We saw something take Renamon!" Guilmon explained how he and Takato had even found them. "I got a good enough look to ..."
Takato stopped him with a hand on his shoulder, however, seeing that Rika was only focused on the newly-freed fox.
Renamon groaned. Her teeth's chattering had slowed, but she was still in discomfort. She breathed slowly, summoning the strength needed to lift her head and look at Rika.
The human girl had never seen her Digimon look this vulnerable before. Even after seeing her in situations like being strung up in webbing, or wrapped in the coils of a massive snake ... this had taken a heavier toll. She knew that this time, her partner had been mere seconds away from death. All while she would have been forced to watch in her own helplessness.
It filled Rika with a sickly mix of fury and fear. Fury towards that dastardly IceDevimon, who had put her friend through all of that just to get to her. Fear that of all the perils Renamon had found herself in, she would soon find herself in the one that didn't end so luckily.
She began trembling. Similarly to Renamon, but for different reasons. This situation was everything she'd wanted to avoid, and though it was now passed, it had brought her to her breaking point.
And before she knew it, she let all that out.
"I ... I told you not to follow me!" she scolded.
"Wh- What??" Renamon stuttered.
"I said I'd be able to handle myself without you, but you just wouldn't leave me alone! And you almost died because of it!"
"Rika ... I ..."
Renamon, for once, was finding herself struggling to speak. She couldn't be hearing this right ... after all this, Rika was still upset about her decisions?
"IceDevimon did get you," she quietly spoke. "The second I was out of the way. I needed to be there so-"
"Exactly! You did nothing! You couldn't help even when you tried! The least you could've done is keep yourself safe!"
Rika's voice was starting to get a little scratchy, and in her distress, she was becoming less and less aware of how her words were coming across. She didn't see the potential hurt them. All she knew was that her friend had shown herself to be vulnerable, nearly destroyed on multiple occasions and unable to save herself. And she wasn't willing to witness it again.
Renamon could clearly tell how shaken Rika was. She herself was trying to recover mentally and physically from the whole ordeal, as well as cope with this latest instance of miserable defeat. One where she couldn't even have the satisfaction of taking down her captor herself.
But being told outright that she was unhelpful, being criticized for trying to serve her role as protector, after what they had both just gone through ... She didn't want to admit it, but it was among the most hurt she'd felt in a long time.
"I'm s-sorry," she uttered through the last of her shivers.
Finally she managed to pull herself back onto her feet. Though she could hardly be considered standing tall right now. "I know that I failed. But next time I'll be better. I'll make sure of it."
"Next time?! Renamon, stop!" Rika barked with a swipe of her arms. "I don't need your protection, okay?! I don't need you!!"
Other than a gasp from the onlooking Takato, not one sound followed that last declaration.
As the city continued its life many meters below them, Digimon and tamer failed to exchange one additional word to one another.
Renamon barely reacted physically to Rika's words. But the tiny increase in width in her deep blue eyes, the way her claws curled in slowly, and how her tail froze in place as her ears went very slightly down, were all subtle clues on just how they had indeed hit her.
Rika, on her end, tried to keep her displeased, intense scowl intact, so as to not let herself appear soft and indecisive after making such a harsh claim.
And Renamon's miserable mood was only made all the worse because of it.
A part of her could see what Rika meant, could see the context behind what she had said ... but it was still an insult. A huge slight on her purpose in being here, her role as a fighting Digimon partner ... and even her friendship with Rika.
It almost as if the old Rika had returned, with a vengeance.
IceDevimon got a lot wrong ... But he was right about one thing. She had failed to be good enough.
Her beautiful face remained largely unresponsive. But her body did move.
It turned around, her majestic tail gently lashing in the evening air, as her legs carried her away from the scene.
Rika's expression finally began to falter, and her stance just slightly veered away from confrontational and towards concerned.
"Renamon?" she asked in a small voice.
But the vixen didn't answer. She merely headed for the edge of the rooftop.
She didn't even turn back to face her human before she leapt off. Flying, flipping, and dashing away into the night in despondence.
Leaving them both with a lingering coldness that rivaled IceDevimon himself.
Well, here it is, the third oneshot of Renamon's peril anthology! Although this time things don't end quite so happily. The day is saved, but our duo leaves on worse terms than they started.
For those who don't know, this is based on an episode where Rika is captured by IceDevimon for the same purposes as in the story. Renamon and company come to save her, but the experience traumatizes Rika into saying she hates all Digimon, prompting Renamon to leave her at the end of the episode. It honestly didn't make too much sense to me there, but for the purposes of what I'm doing I wanted to incorporate something like that with this alternate take. Hopefully I got across both characters' feelings and had Rika's actions make sense, as it does work off the previous two fics and what they've been through in my tales up to this point ... and *might* carry over to the later ones. Maybe. ;)
But here's something I never thought I'd do: ice bondage! For some reason, it was a concept I envisioned for Renamon when thinking back on not just that episode, but also a veeeeery brief moment in the first Tamers movie where she's stuck to a building wall with ice. The aesthetic came to grow on me, and with all the conceptual pieces I wanted to bring to this story, I thought it'd be really COOL thing to do! XD Partially for the sake of the emotional storytelling and partially to make the bondage more appealing to those less enthused about ice, I took some liberties with what it did to Renamon and made it the closest she's come to death yet. With it being my first time portraying someone literally freezing to death, I hope I did alright and effectively got across what Renamon was going through. :)
Thanks for reading this more unconventional distress fic! I know it was another risk for me in some ways. Sorry for leaving you all on a downer note, but hopefully the bondage was fun enough to get you through it! Let me know what you think of it, both regarding the story and how the bondage was for you! Renamon's far from finished, so here's to the trouble she gets into next with Parasitic Relationships! :D
Also, I do plan on making manips for both this and the previous fic's image. I just need to get myself in the mood and find the time.
Renamon's gag speech translated:
"Mmrrphnrr! Rmrnnphrm nnnh!?" - "Monster! What have you done?!"
"Mrm mmrrmph!!" - "You beast!!"
"Rnghm!!" - "Rika!!"

Seeing as this whole post is pretty much ice-themed, I decided to have a listen to some music tracks for ice levels in videogames while I read this... Although, I'm not sure whether Valak Mountain or Tantal from Xenoblade 1 and Xenoblade 2 respectively fit into the story more...! XD If you wanna hear all of those music tracks, just let me know! :)
Anyways, about this story... Honestly, I think this is the one story in all of the many stories you made that didn't actually 'feel' like a Bondage story even though it very clearly is. The usual bindings are there once Renamon gets put into them, but that feeling is automatically lost when the ice began to expand and cover up her whole body... Not to say it's a bad thing, though; or at least, it's not 'too' bad a thing on my end. I actually really liked the idea you were going for here, having the bindings gradually expand to cover up the body more! I guess it's just me not feeling Ice Bondage anywhere near as much as the previous two stories in this anthology...!
Though where it lacks in the Bondage Appeal, it definitely made up for it with the character interactions! IceDevimon sounds like quite the fitting and imposing figure I'd expect have massive control over Ice and Cold, what with his eerie description and voice. It may just be me recently reconnecting with some of Markiplier's older videos, but something about IceDevimon's appearance gave me some serious Slender Man vibes... As for Renamon and Rika, they're still pretty top-notch and I do see where both sides are coming from. I'm honestly more on Renamon's side than anything else since I feel this whole situation could've been avoided had Rika been honest with her Digimon partner, but I'd assume that even if she knew the actual reasoning, Renamon still wouldn't have listened and just tail her anyways...! I could be wrong on a detail, but that's how I'm seeing this...!
In conclusion, it's not as great as 'Web of Alliances' or 'Slithering Seduction', but this story's pretty cool regardless...! XD
(Oh, and yay on those Edits/Manips happening! Can't wait to see them! ^^)

I looked them up myself, and they're good choices as usual!
I can't act like I don't know what you mean. I'm very aware that this is by far the bondage method with the least appeal so far in this story. I thought adding the expanding ice would improve on it, and in my opinion it does, but for some it's not going to be enough. Honestly I doubt I'd have even given this concept any consideration had Renamon not been in the scenes she was that got me thinking about it, so that goes to show how specific the appeal was for me to do this at all.
Well that's good! While the bondage is of course not going to be as amazing, my big concern is making sure that my writing is still as good as it was in the previous two. I enjoyed IceDevimon as a villain, especially with the whole metaphorical thing of him being icy in his powers and his personality, plus him wanting one of our characters for himself. I agree that Renamon's in the right here; the goal isn't to say that they both have stances I can get behind, rather that you both know why they're making the choices they're making. With Rika not being used to being open about her emotions, I figured it makes sense that she would be bad at conveying her true concerns and talking things out properly. And of course, Renamon's not much more competent in that regard, and bubbling insecurities are surely not helping things either!
Again, I just hope that the reason it's not as good to you is because of the bondage involved and not the writing. I did have someone else call it their favorite of the three so far, so it's clearly varied in terms of how positive the response has been. Thanks for sharing your thoughts regardless! :D
But seriously, a "cool" pun? What loser would do that?

Did you listen to their Day and Night themes, too? 'Cause Valak Mountain's night theme is just as f*cking beautiful as Valak Mountain is at night! ^^
I do like the idea of the bindings gradually building up and thus putting the victim in it in more of a bind, but I feel the 'feeling' I'm looking for with that could be and has been done better in other forms of Bondage, such as Web Bondage or Mummification. Still, I will give you credit for going with a more original approach to this story! :)
Yeah, that was a pretty cool idea having him try to sway Rika into making him her Digimon to tame! Considering how I've heard Rika is characterized both here and in the show, it made perfect sense for IceDevimon to try and do that. Too bad he went and did it when it was too late to do so! I'm not gonna lie, though. Seeing him and his personality got me thinking on making an character with ice-based powers, but has a personality more fitting towards someone who'd use fire; kinda like an contrasting opposite towards Blaze the Cat from the Sonic games, if you will. And yeah, that makes sense!
You're very much welcome! And considering we both used it, it looks like we're both 'losers', then. Hopefully, the comedy police just give us the 'cold shoulder' for our crappy ice-related puns. otherwise they're gonna 'break the ice' on us and book us a one-way ticket to comedy-jail; preferably all bundled up in these 'Straightsacks' to keep us all 'cool-headed' and quiet...! XD

Just did, and oh yeah, those are gorgeous pieces of music! :D
Oh for sure, I don't doubt that if the concept were done with tentacles or something it would really be something else entirely! I can't imagine myself doing ice bondage again any time soon, if even ever again.
I do give the show a lot of credit for that premise! It all makes sense and makes for good conflict. Interesting comparison of Blaze to the kind of character you have in mind; I wouldn't have thought a character like her would have made too much sense, but lo and behold they pulled it off, so I'm sure it can be done with the opposite concept!
Well in that case, I'm taking off to leave them to you! Every man for himself! :O

Easily one of the best music tracks in the whole game, and that's saying something; this game has a TON of great music tracks! ^^
I can see why, but again, kudos for going that extra mile and trying to make it work! :)
Yeah! If people can pull off giving a character with Fire-based abilities more of a cold and icy personality, I don't see it being too hard to also give a character who has Ice-based abilities more of a hot and fiery personality! It'd actually be rather interesting to see! :)
You little rat...! Can't believe you'd be the one to give me that 'cold shoulder'! XD

Clearly, if this little selection is any indication! ^^
For the record, I do think it worked well. It's just not something I have any rush to revisit. :)
There's something need about that contrast, I admit. It just must be tricky to do when certain powers feel more inclined to be paired with certain attitudes.
Cold Shoulder ... Why the hell didn't I make that the name of this fic, that's so much better ... XD

Yeah, I know. :)
I feel it can be done, though. The closest that comes to mind of what I'm talking about is Snow from Final Fantasy 13, but I wouldn't know for sure since I've never played the game nor do I plan on to considering all the bad things I've heard about it...
I don't know. 'Ice-Cold Jealousy' is a pretty fitting title, too...! :)
