Quest type: Pest Hunt / Ritual Dispel
Threat level: Low.
Location: Dirt-murk Bog
Rewards:
100 copper coins, a barrel of wine, one full equipment repair at the blacksmith, seven nights at the inn, one curse lift from the local priestess.
Description:
Rumours say a spell cast by a witch long ago at Dirt-murk Bog is causing frogs to reproduce at an alarming rate. Nearby villages have been complaining about the excessive croaking at night, and many are reporting signs of insomnia and daily migraines.
Villagers have gathered their resources and offered a reward for whoever manages to deal with the frog infestation by either eliminating them or undoing the curse that is causing them to multiply.
— How long has this quest been on the board? — Tom, the healer, raised an eyebrow — I’m pretty sure I saw it last week.
— No wonder! — Levine, the rogue, scoffed — Look at the reward! It’s complete garbage!
— Besides, the location is a stinky bog! — Elliot, the bard, frowned as if he could actually smell it — No way I’m putting my boots into those disgusting waters, man.
— This quest isn’t even a challenge — Mimy, the wizard, scanned the rest of the board, completely ignoring the pest hunt — Frogs and a low level curse. Ain’t even worth wasting my fireballs.
— I still feel bad for the villagers — Tom drooped his head — Don’t you agree Sarlena?
— Indeed — the paladin replied — But we have more important battles to fight. Besides, this is a low level quest, so we should probably leave it to the aspiring heroes. They need these kinds of adventures to boost their starting gears and gain some experience.
— It’s just that… — Tom sighed — This reward is probably everything the villagers had to offer. The fact that the quest is still unfinished is because not even the first time adventurers want to take it!
— Sucks to be them — the rogue shrugged, staring at the quest board — Check this one out: caravan escort. Reward of 50 gold coins in money and 50 gold coins in products. This is a good quest!
— How about this one? — the bard pointed to another — Rescue a mermaid captured by slave traders. Reward of 120 rainbow shells, 10 pearls and, most importantly, a kiss from the mermaid herself! Those kisses are said to grant a full week of uninterrupted bliss!
— I’m okay with both the escort and the mermaid thing — said Mimy — But if the magical kiss doesn’t work on me, Elliot ought to give me his share of the pearls.
— I deem both quests worthy — said the paladin — However, I’m more inclined to help the mermaid in distress. I can’t bear the thought of an innocent creature kept away from her family by merciless slave-traders.
Everyone looked at Tom, the healer, waiting for his opinion.
— Okay, okay — he waves both hands, defeated — Let’s save the mermaid. But if this damn frog infestation is still on the board when we come back, we gotta go for it. I can’t believe weeks have passed and no one has bothered to do it. Quests for hunting down rats in the sewers rarely stay more than a few hours on the board!
— Don’t worry, Tom — said the paladin — I give you my word that when we come back I’ll help those poor villagers…
The rest of the party nodded and they all left the tavern, ready to save a mermaid.
But that’s not the adventure we’ll be telling today...
Esika, a low level warrior, walked slowly across the murky waters, her boots getting constantly stuck in the mud and releasing a foul odor with each step. She had a sword in one hand and a shield in the other, but no equipment in the world could save her from the unpleasant nature of the bog nor the annoying and neverending ribbiting in the distance, which only seemed to get louder as she advanced.
The poor girl was already regretting that stupid frog infestation quest, wondering how many other adventurers had gone into into that same bog only to give up and retreat out of boredom, annoyance or illness.
She knew for sure that others had tried that quest before. Not only was the reward actually good for beginners, but there was a chance to find at least one magical item in the abandoned witch’s hut, or at the very least some ingredients that could be sold to an alchemist. The only explanation for that quest still being up was that people couldn’t stand the fetid atmosphere.
Esika continued to advance further and further, the smell getting worse every minute and the croaking of the frogs getting louder. Her pants were drenched in mud all the way to the knees, mosquitoes were swarming around constantly, and her shirt was covered in sticky sweat. That was the most annoying quest she had ever attempted!
A few minutes later, Esika couldn’t even hear her own thoughts over the loud ribbiting echoing all around her. There were frogs in the trees, rocks, lily pads, and everywhere else. She even tried to slay those annoying creatures with her sword, but they were incredibly agile and dodged all of her attacks. It was like they had some supernatural skill that made them impossible to hit.
— Damn it! — she grits her teeth, already getting a migraine — This is a nightmare! No wonder everyone gave up! I better find this witch hut fast!
Her body was begging to go back and pick another quest. That one wasn’t worth it! But at the same time, she was already too far into the bog and had suffered too much to retreat. It was a matter of honor now! She had to finish it!
Clank!
Her boots kicked something hard under the water and she looked down to see what it was. To her surprise, it was a perfectly well maintained steel helmet that seemed freshly bought from a blacksmith.
— What kind of adventurer dumps their helmet?
However, as the singing of the frogs became even louder, she didn’t discard the possibility that some poor soul had been driven mad by those very sounds and ran away, leaving that piece of equipment behind.
A few more minutes of walking and Esika stumbles into an axe, a chain mail, a buckler, a crossbow, a backpack and much, much more, everything in perfect conditions except for being dirty. Enough equipment to fit a party of three were simply lying under the greenish surface. Her curiosity turned to dread. The adventurers that came before her didn’t give up. They perished! Something consumed their bodies whole, leaving only the equipment! Esika was next!

Breathing heavily, she prepared for a fight, looking in all directions, up and down, trying to find whatever beast could’ve done that. Maybe some high level monster had made its home in the swamp and was slaying unaware adventurers! Maybe the witch had never left!
Her eyes darted frantically, scanning the surroundings for threats, but all she saw was frogs everywhere! Lots and lots of frogs converging to her location. The ribbiting was so loud that it became the only sound in the world, echoing inside her skull.
Esika stood there, heart almost exploding; sweat dripping over her eyes; legs shaking; face completely cold; and breathing out of rhythm. The warrior once thought she would grow to be a legendary hero, but now she was about to become the prey of some unknown creature! Just another adventurer who would mysteriously vanish without a trace.
A dot of pink light flashed a few yards from her and she immediately turned to it, ready for a fight. However, instead of a fearsome monster, she saw only a colorful frog emitting a strange aura and looking directly into her eyes.
“It’s preparing a spell!”
Before she could attack, another frog started to glow pink, then another one, and another, until Esika found herself surrounded by a dozen light-emitting creatures, all croaking at the same time in a migraine inducing chant. Those weren’t regular critters. Each of those frogs had almost the same level as herself!
She wasn’t supposed to face enemies with a level as high as hers, much less several at the same time! The warrior girl didn’t know if she was supposed to attack or defend herself. All her months hunting rats and slimes didn’t prepare her for that! The only option was to run!
— Help! — she screamed, hoping someone would hear her pleas over the intense croaking.
As soon as she began to sprint, more glowing frogs jumped on her way, coming from everywhere. Their strange aura struck her body, causing Esika to glow with that same eerie pink. Then, her muscles weakened and her running turned into a limping.
[ Stamina: 264 / 600 ]
Under normal circumstances, a warrior could run miles without tiring, but her energy was being quickly drained by those creatures. Still, running was her only option and attempting to fight would bring her the same fate that all those others had suffered. She had to keep running and praying. She had to!
[ Stamina: 105 / 600 ]
— H-help! Please! — but her voice was completely silenced by the frogs.
Whenever she got away from one group of enemies, another would show up, glowing and shooting that cursed energy at her. Those bastards had been hiding among the regular frogs all along! They had been waiting patiently for Esika to venture deep enough into the bog to make her escape impossible! That quest was a trap! She had to tell others! She had to survive! She had to convince some strong adventurers to come before those man-eating frogs made any more victims! She had to...
[ Stamina: 0 / 600 ]
Esika collapsed breathless on the water, her knees sinking into the fetid mud, and a line of drool hanging from the sides of her mouth. Her body was enveloped by that bright, pink mist that continued to sap away her vital source. Her muscles were unresponsive and she couldn’t walk one more inch. In that helpless state, the warrior’s life flashed before her eyes and she regretted every decision that had led her to that point.
The girl attempted one more cry for help, but as she opened her mouth, something inhuman came out:
— Ribbit! — she covered her mouth with both hands in panic. For one second, she thought that the frogs were croaking so loudly that she couldn’t hear her own voice. But as she tried to call for help again, the same moist, repugnant sound emerged — RIBBIT!
“This can’t be! No!”
Despite not having any more stamina to be drained, the frogs continued robbing Esika of the precious attributes she grinded years to obtain. Her body was about to be sucked dry until it vanished completely! That kind of magic was known to be used by boss level liches, not goddamn frogs! Is this seriously how she dies!?
[ Strength: 25 ] [ Dexterity 20 ] [ Intellect: 25 ]
— R-ribbit… ribbit! — she sniffled and squirmed; tears running down her eyes, unable to accept that a bunch of slimy critters were about to take her down in what was supposed to be an easy quest — Rib-bit!
[ Strength: 15 ] [ Dexterity 10 ] [ Intellect: 25 ]
— R-rib-bit… ribbit! — Once her muscles atrophied completely, Esika felt physically hollow, like a sack of skin held in place by air alone. She was so light that her body floated on the water surface akin to a leaf — Ribbit?
[ Strength: 1 ] [ Dexterity 1 ] [ Intellect: 25 ]
— Ribbit! Ribbit! — Despite her best efforts to muffle that inhumane croaking, she quickly found herself singing along with the other frogs against her will. Simply breathing in and out caused that humiliating sound to escape her — Ribbit! Ribbit!
— Rib...
When she breathed in, her belly bulged out with pressure.
— ...bit!
When she breathed out, part of the pressure left her body, but a fraction of it remained trapped inside. Esika was involuntarily pumping herself with swamp gas.
— Rib… — her tummy filled and pushed the fabric of the shirt — ...bit! — then it expelled the air, but maintained a round shape, pressing against her belt.
As she continued to croak, Esika’s body bloated similarly to a pregnant woman, and her belly button popped out. After mere minutes of unstoppable ribbiting, her torso was already as large as a barrel of wine and her adult clothes seemed made for children. Excess gas moved down to her ass, forcing it to expand, becoming spherical and immobilized.
— Riiiibbit!
Her skin stretched beyond human limits, but still she couldn’t stop filling herself like a balloon. At that point, she was so full that her body wasn’t even touching the water anymore, but floating a few palms over it.
— Riiiiiibbit!
Her once comfortable pants appeared to be tight shorts… then a thong… then it ripped in the middle and each half wrapped around one thigh, similar to a bandana. The remaining threads of fabric snapped one at a time as her butt inflated into a pair of spheres bigger than a fat merchant’s belly. The only clothing still covering her lower half were a few bits kept in place by the belt.
— Riiiiiiiibbit!
Her torso expanded enough to fit a pony inside, and as her leather belt stretched to its limit, the warrior’s body was forced into a chubby hourglass shape by that very resilient accessory. Her breasts bulged out and pushed her shirt up, popping most of its buttons, making it seem more like a green scarf. Her neck started to sink into that gassy mass, as if being swallowed by herself. And to top it off, both elbows vanished and each arm became a perfectly round balloon, still holding onto the sword and shield by pressure alone.
— Riiiiiiiiiiiiibbit!
Her skin turned green and slimy, with many dark spots appearing everywhere. Her tongue flopped out and hung from her mouth, growing almost a full meter. Her tailbone pushed outwards and wiggled rapidly, her spine gaining a few more inches.
— Rii-ii-ib-bit!
That body couldn’t take any more, but still she kept breathing in swamp gas! Her skin was almost see-through. Her clothes were reduced to rags. Her body was lighter than the air. The outcome was becoming clear...
— Rii-ii-iii-iii-iii…
“I’m gonna…”
— ...-iii-iii… iii…
“I’m g-gonna…p-p...”
— … iii… ii… i…
“I’M GONNA POP!”
Esika held her breath…
But the frogs continued to croak that cursed melody…
Her cheeks puffed and she squinted both eyes…
The ribbiting reverberated inside her hollow form, causing the girl to vibrate…
Her face turned purple…
She couldn’t take it anymore…
She had to breathe…
She had to...
— Ribb…
Before completing that last croak, Esika reached a tipping point.
FSCHHHHHHHHHH!
Pressure leaked violently through literally every existing hole in her body, releasing a dense pink cloud that completely covered her vision. The warrior girl started to deflate much quicker than she had inflated in the first place which, despite being a terrifying experience, felt relieving at the same time… Like finally being able to release a burp after holding it for an entire day.
fschssssssss...
She became smaller and denser, her muscles coming back into existence and her skin returning to its normal non-stretched form. That change brought Esika closer to the water until eventually touching the cold, muddy surface once again.
fschsss…ss...
For a moment Esika thought her body was returning to its natural shape, but she continued to shrink more and more. The world around her seemed bigger and out of proportion, as if the trees were towers and the shallow waters were a deep lake. On top of that, those tiny frogs were now as big as people!
Esika submerged in the waters and immediately started to panic, kicking her tiny, weakened, unfamiliar limbs desperately, trying to reach a safe place. A few seconds of struggling later, she managed to hop onto a “huge” lily pad, then looked down at herself. The warrior expected to see a mini person, but what she saw was a thousand times worse than that.
— R-ribbit… Ribbit!
“Oh no! No! No! Not like this!”
Her body was shiny and covered in mucus. Her fingers were much longer and ended in spherical, sticky bulbs. Her legs were squatting in a strange angle and seemed adapted to perform long jumps. Her tongue felt locked in place by a spring and ready to launch out like a disgusting projectile.
— Ribbit…
“Eeep! No!”
Esika was a frog, just like all the other colorful critters that had cursed her…
— Ribbit…
“I gotta go back to town and ask someone to dispel this curse!”
As she prepared to start her long journey back to civilization, Esika looked at the equipment pieces submerged in the waters, scattered around the place where her old human body exploded into a pink cloud seconds ago. The scene was awfully familiar...
— Ribbit…
“These frogs. They were also adventurers!”
— Ribbit!
“Why did you do this to me!”
The creatures ignored her protest and went back to their usual lives, no longer glowing and no longer trying to chase her. Those fearsome enemies were acting just like any regular frog would, unassuming and unsuspicious.
— Ribbit…
“I’m talking to you guys! Answer me!”
Esika tried closing her fists in anger, but those fingers no longer operated like she was used to. She tried to cry, but her eyes shed no tears. She slapped the surface of the lily pad with all her might, but the plant barely moved.
— Ribbit…
“Why did you guys do this to me? I could’ve saved you all!”
She screamed, but the other frogs didn’t mind her. Instead they simply continued to sing that same music Esika heard when first venturing into the bog. But this time the music no longer sounded annoying, in fact it was quite inviting. Her own body felt compelled to sing along.
Esika joined the choir for a while, but then, as she realized what was going on, the frog-girl shook her head and returned to her senses.
— Ribbit…
“I don’t have time to sing. I need to go back… fast!”
Esika jumped on the cold waters and swimmed clumsily towards the next lily pad, still getting used to her new appendages. The journey into the bog as a human had taken her almost two hours of walking, which meant that, as a frog, the backtracking would likely take a full day! The mere thought of having to feed off mosquitos along the way almost made her puke.
[ Acquired: Perfect dodge ]
[ Acquired: Frog-ification Melody ]
[ Strength: 1 ] [ Dexterity 1 ] [ Intellect: 15 ]
The neverending frog melody continued, and Esika found herself instinctually singing in rhythm with the others. All attempts to croak at her own pace felt dysphoric. Singing one wrong note was physically painful. She was forced to join the choir merely to keep herself from collapsing to the mental pressure.
— Ribbit…
“S-shut up! All of you! Shut up!”
[ Intellect: 10 ]
The former warrior continued to swim and hop from lilypad to lilypad, moving at an incredibly slow pace, croaking all the way. Her own voice became just one more among the hundreds of others, and she could barely distinguish her thoughts from the music in the background.
— Ribbit…
“I must… go on...”
[ Intellect: 5 ]
Her body wanted to stay and croak all day.
— Ribbit…
“I... don’t... want… to… sing...”
[ Intellect: 1 ]
She stopped moving.
— Ribbit…
“Me… not… frog...”
[ Intellect: 0 ]
— Ribbit…
“Ribbit…”

Location: Dirt-murk Bog
Rewards:
150 copper coins, two barrels of wine, two full equipment repairs at the blacksmith, a month at the inn, three curse lifts from the local priestess.
Description:
Rumours say a spell cast by a witch long ago at Dirt-murk Bog is STILL causing the frogs to reproduce at an alarming rate. Nearby villages have been complaining about the excessive croaking at night, and many are reporting signs of insomnia and daily migraines. Some small businesses have already left town because of this!
Due to an excessive number of adventurers who gave up on the quest, villagers have gathered more resources and offered a bigger reward for whoever manages to deal with the frog infestation by either eliminating them or undoing the curse that is causing them to multiply.
— I can’t believe this quest is still on the board! — Tom yelled — Are we running out of low level adventurers or something? Is the new generation too cocky to go on easy quests?
— It’s not the same poster! — Levine laughed — Look at the reward! It’s bigger now! Still trash, but bigger. Maybe if we wait a big longer it might actually be worth doing.
— I doubt that, man! — Elliot pointed at the location — My clothes cost way more than this reward. No point in ruining them with stinky mud.
— You know you can just buy cheaper clothes, right? — Mimy raised an eyebrow — I’m starting to think you are afraid of frogs.
— I’m afraid of everything disgusting — Elliout admitted, shamelessly — I would rather fight slave hunters than rats and slimes.
— Hey! — Tom punched the wall — You guys promised we would help these poor people after the mermaid quest!
— Correction! — Levine raised a finger — Sarlena promised she would go with you.
— Sarlena is at the church purifying her soul! — Tom protested.
— Not our problem, man — Elliot shrugged.
— She’s purifying herself because YOU told the mermaid to kiss her! — Tom was doing her best not to punch the bard in the face — Why would you even do that?
— I know! I’m an idiot! I thought it would be hot! — Elliot facepalmed himself — I thought we would EACH get a kiss from her! I didn’t know it was only one kiss for one person only! I wasted a precious mermaid kiss!
— I must say that at least it was priceless to watch — Mimy smirked — Seeing a noble paladin squirming and rolling on the floor, trying to contain her moans is not something you see every day.
— Won’t she lose her holy status? — Levine scratched his head, more curious than worried.
— No, because she didn’t do it on purpose — Tom sighed — But she needs to be purified nonetheless.
— What should we do while our meat shield is recovering? — asked Levine.
— How about we go help those villagers with the frog infestation?
— Nah! — the other three said at the same time — Give the rookies a chance to handle it.
Tom, Elliot, Levine, Mimy and Sarlena are characters from another story:

— Ribbit…
“Ribbit…”
Quest type: Pest Hunt / Ritual Dispel
Threat level: Low.
Location: Dirt-murk Bog
