I think they are still seeing themselves as humans. In panel 14 you see a human hand super-imposed over his new Lycanroc paw. I think the one turning into a Lucario might be subconsciously using his psychic powers to make them seem human in their eyes, or at least that is my theory.

You are right, the illusion is weak, if he scratched himsellf he will became aware of it.
