Chapter 29: Plans In the Castle
In the castle dungeons, Shadow-Sneak was in a cell beneath the palace, placed under lock and key and guarded by Eric’s personal guard. He had been formulating plans on how to escape from his predicament.
“The children and the queens...” He thought. “They’ll make excellent hostages.” “However, most of my men are still in the forest...IF they’re even alive like those brats stated.” He gritted his teeth. “And those creatures...what are they? And what hold do those brats have on them?”
His thoughts were interrupted by some noise coming from above. His cell was placed near the stairs so he could get a good look on who was coming down. To his surprise, he saw some of his men, tied up in thick ropes and covered in bruises and scratches and escorted by soldiers.
“Hey!” Shadow-Sneak exclaimed as he got up and went to the bars of his cell. “What happened to you all?! Talk to me now!” The bandits only groaned and moaned, unable to reply. One captain, dressed in royal blue came to the cell and slammed a thick stick at the bars, making him back off.
“I am Captain Mario,” He replied. “1st captain of King Eric’s royal forces. I am here to ask you some questions on the night you were captured, to see what you were doing out in the forest.” Shadow-Sneak glared at the captain, seeing how physically fit he was and knew it would be futile to fight his way out.
He noticed that two of his top fellow bandits were not among the rest of his band. “Where are the rest of my forces?” He demanded softly. “There should be more...” “They’re in the infirmary, getting healed before we put them in their cells.” Captain Mario replied. “One of your larger band members has been critically injured.” He added. “Burned badly...he will be treated, and it WILL be a miracle if he can even walk again after the treatment’s done.”
Shadow-Sneak was now thinking fast about the situation. His men HAD the children in their grasp before the Monsuno came to save them. And if Tight-Fist was burned badly, he deduced that one of the monsters could breathe fire! That would explain the burns!
As the bandit leader went to sit back on his stone bed, Captain Mario turned back to the stairs, only stopping to look back at him with a hard gaze. “Prepare yourself.” He stated. “In a few minutes, we’ll start your interrogation.” “Just remember, Shadow-Sneak.” He warned. “Given your current condition, I would strongly advise you not to try to escape.”
With that, he walked back up to the stairs, leaving the guards to watch over the prisoners. Shadow-Sneak thought. “If Tight-Fist and the others are in the infirmary, then I’m on my own for the time being. I need to find a way to escape quickly! But how...?”
(Meanwhile...upstairs)
While the bandits were locked away in the dungeons, everyone was getting ready for the party to start in two days’ time! The servants were checking up the decorations that were to be hung up in the right places for the party while Chef Louie was going over some recipes for the food he would prepare for the birthday party.
The proud chef was determined to make some of the most delicious delicacies known to man, for the guests to really enjoy his work. Ariel was with the other queens in the living room, going over plans for the party games and entertainment for Melody’s 13th birthday bash. Florian and Phillp were helping the servants to decorate the upper levels to make them more welcoming.
Belle had just suggested a game for the party when they heard the front door open, and Eric entered with the other royals. The wives went over their respective husbands and hugged them tightly, before asking them questions. “So, did you find anything in the forest?” Ariel asked her husband.
Eric nodded. “Yes...” He replied. “But, it’s much more complicated than that.” Ariel was puzzled by his reply but Eric shook his head and guided his wife to a nearby room. Once they were in there, they closed the doors so that no one would peep or sneak in. He turned to his wife and she saw the confused look on his face.
“Ariel, what we saw in the woods...” Eric explained. “it only brought more questions than answers.” “We saw a huge crater, I believe they were made from the falling stars we saw last night.” He added. “Then, we found a trail that led to Shadow-Sneak's fellow bandits...but here’s the weird thing.”
“We found them, badly bruised and beaten up.” He explained. “They even had scratches and bite marks on them from some kind of animal.” “One of them, a giant named Tight-Fist...he was burned. Very badly” A look of grim concern appeared on his face.
“His whole body looked like he had been hit by intense flames.” He added. “He was barely still breathing and alive...” Ariel’s eyes widened, and she held a hand to her mouth to stifle a gasp when she heard this.
“There’s more.” Eric continued. “When we met up with the others, we found more bandits covered in bites and scratches.” “And there were the footprints and the claw marks...” He added. “Larger than any animal I’ve seen.” “Claw marks...?” Ariel muttered in shock.
Eric left out the part of the blood and the dagger he found, so Ariel won’t get too scared. As he looked at his beautiful wife, he concluded. “Ariel, I think the children are keeping something from us.” “First the falling stars, the strange light we saw at the distance,” he listed down. “the way we found the bandits, the unusual tracks, and now what one of the bandits was screaming earlier.”
“I believe Melody and the other children had help, and they intent on keeping their identity of our new saviors from us.” Ariel was now confused as she tried to figure out why Melody would want to keep the identity of the ones who saved her a secret from them.
She looked at her husband and whispered. “Eric, should we confront Melody about this? Should we try talking to her?” “Don’t worry, Ariel.” He replied. “Let’s just see how this plays out.” “Our girl’s growing up and she’s capable of making her own decisions now.”
“If we try to push it further, it’ll only make the situation worse.” He assured. “We just need to have faith and trust in her decision and when she’s ready, she’ll tell us herself.” Ariel nodded in understanding, given her past history with her own father and all.
“I understand...” She replied. “But, it won’t be easy for me.” Eric gave his lady a small smile. “Come on, let’s go join the others.” He assured her. “If we explain to them why it’s so important not to push the issue, I’m sure we can find out what they are hiding without blowing things out of proportions on either side.”
Ariel nodded, a wider smile on her face. Leave it to her husband to be both wise and smart. She took his hand and they left the room to speak to the others about this development, hoping that the situation would reveal itself soon and above all, the children would be kept safe and sound.
