I got some good feedback on my second preview that I gone ahead and submitted a third. I made a few changes like fixing the eyes. Now they are more even but I preserved the serious expression. I also moved the irises inward a little. I think it look much better now. I also added more shading and highlights but the final shadows I'll do once I settle on a background.
One of the suggestion is using a space themed background. So I sketched out some sort of spaceship interior thing. Just a quickly so I can 'explore' how it would look. Not sure I'll go with it though. Any other ideas?

The eyes look much better and I like the texture on the nose. I might suggest a bit of darker shading to separate the head and neck area since the fur seems to blend together a bit. This is a definite improvement over previous pictures you've done of critters with fur.
I liked the background sketch and think it'll look neat in color.

Once I get more of the background done, I got and do my final shadow layer that ties everything together overall. But that is a while away as I have a long way to go on the background.
The main thing I am concerned about is if I overdid the glare on the fur. Not sure if I went too wild on it or not. My fur technique is still shaky though this one I feel is one of my better ones so far. My eyes and nose work I do think is pretty good on my arts so I am happy with that. I still not where I want to be on my fur however.
I started making the panels for the spaceship interior. Since Paint Shop Pro does vector art quite well, I dug up a copy and installed it on my art computer. What I plan is make the panels flat, copy it into GIMP and use the perspective tool to 'install' the panels in place. I hope it won't look too crisp but I can always use the blur and smudge tool to soften it if that is the case.

Hm, the over all idea for the background looks okay, yet at this point I can not say for sure.
Hm, might I suggest darkening the nose, or a shade closer to the fur of the muzzle, the nose of a hyena's in general is most similar in color to black. Brown works but something about that color seems...off. Otherwise like Van-Weasel pointed I like the texture as well, I can't think of much else to mention at this time.

I barely started on the background so there is still time to go with something else if you have an ideas. Besides, I could always use it somewhere else if I get too far on it.
I can darken the nose color easily since it is on the base color layer. I don't need to mess with any of the texturing, thus I will be able in a snap.
