Ok, be gentle guys... I'm just practicing with Snake's tablet, and I thought I should use one of my own pieces rather than a comission for practice.
My feelings on this first practice are mixed. Some parts I love, some I hate... had no fucking idea what to do about a background. The tablet lets me do some neat things, and I like some of the almost watercolorish effects it let me do, but I also hate how often it left areas where the background bleeds through, how much of a pain it is to change any settings, etc...
I hope I get better with the thing. So anyway, here's Lafitte in a fencing pose. I'm a big fan of dynamic poses, and I try to do them usually, though often they end up just looking awful. This one I pretty much like, though. And yes, that cutlass is still ill suited to fencing.

Since I'm pretty sure I'm going to forget this by the time you get back, I'm going to leave a comment:
I had forgotten, some how, how fond you are of watercolour, and really, i think you should give Painter a shot for it. I'll have to hover over you to demonstrate some of the tools since Painter's just... wierd, but I think you'll find it more fun than Photoshop. Unless you want to learn the lost art of air brushing for 500 years to get something that's sortamaybe palatable. :P Seriously, Airbrushing usually doesn't work out so hot unless you keep it reaally simple or reallly complicated. Just one of those things...

Barbossa. Exactly. That's the pirate at whom she reminds me.
Especially in this scene:

Huh, there are a few similarities... though I did that piece long before that screen capture was put out, amazingly enough.
One thing I love in pirates is the variety of archetypes: it's truly immense! There's the dashing, heroic pirate of Captain Blood, the antihero freedom fighter of Doctor Syn, the gentleman scoundrel of Jean Lafitte, the amoral but endearing monster of Barbarossa....

Hehehe... I know what you mean. In my case I have a pretty simular feeling about rogues.
Back in my RP-group I played so many different characters but I always loved my thieves most.
Another reason, I think, is the romantic and even mysterious side of people who stand outside of the law, be it rogues or pirates.
Their lifes are always on the edge after all and the dark and evil aspect of their profession makes you wonder if they have good sides as well. ^_^

Hahahhahaha... evil sides. Well, I'm an anti-moralist, actually, so I don't really believe in concepts like evil. To me, a pirate is someone who refused to share their allegiance with nations, to let anyone tell them what they were or what they were to do. They demanded freedom. There's a bit of socialist/communist proto-ideology to it as well: they rob the rich, and why should these poor-as-scum commoners care that Lord Too-Much-Money is going to loose some money? I like the way of thinking, seriously.
It DOES fascinate me, though, that people invariably love criminals, in history and media, and understanding why has been a long term research for me.
rogues are awesome, too. Done a few, and some of my friends play them exclusively. So variable, and so unrestrained.
