The most I waited was something like 4 months after "day 14" step, then I proceeded with a funny thing called "paypal refund" and magically the artist reappeared the day after with a rough sketch that of course I didn't want anymore
Personally, it's more about mutual respect.
I don't make my customers wait months, so I expect the same level of professionality from other artists aswell. And I don't care if they're rookies or popufurs. You treat me good, I become your best customer, you treat me bad, no matter what's your RL issues, you'll get a new backstab to add to your collection ^^

I wouldn't call it a 'backstab'. I imagine it more like that scene from so many cartoons where the bad guy pulls a lever and a hidden panel in the floor under the other person opens up and they fall to their doom, along with a sound clip of Darth Vader saying "You have failed me for the last time".
It sometimes really depends on the case and if the artist has a good reputation. I mean if they can't draw cause of a health issue for a few months then it's reasonable to give them some more time, especially if drawing is unpleasant, as it would mostly reflect in the finished work.
To avoid artists that just leave their clients hanging it can be helpful to look at their queue or how long it took for them to finish some comissions, or just to ask a few of their clients.

I have this experience a few months ago but the artists apologize and made me another little free commission as compensation. Sometimes when passes a month or two, I'm afraid to ask about my commission. One time, an artist blocked me only for asking after almost 4 months of waiting without sketches...
I paid three artists of varying quality in 2020. One got away, the other two simply chose not to and squandered my money the entire year, lol. I caught one of them celebrating his new Occulus Rift, and the other only only began starting page one [after a 7 month gap] because a friend of his said, 'Y'know, maybe you kinda should do it', and he was like, "Yeah... I guess, I dunno." Lol.
...then there's me who had a terrible 2020, went through a slump with my own overdue commissions, then actually did something about it while the others just did f'k all. xD The fact I did a better job than two inflation artists with three times the amount of watchers I do speaks volumes.
The remaining two only paid me back because I had to fight tooth and nail to get them to do it with a bit of persuasion, lol. I don't regret it. I don't like my hard-earned cash being wasted.

DING-DING-DING-DING-DING-DING!!!
THAT makes me seethe with rage.
Okay, I know. I get it. Manic depression fucking sucks. Mental health crisises suck. Medical emergencies suck. Rent/car/pet/family emergencies suck.
I can deal with that. I can handle it. Even when it seems to happen on a non-stop chain of events.
But when I see you doing six and seven pieces of art in a row for your friends, and mine has been languishing for months?
Yeah. Not having it.

I have a hard time trusting artists. Their heads swell up and Ego's get inflated. Had a few get nasty with me after they said they were my friends. But they ended up blocking me cause I wanted to know what and how the art work was coming along. Once an artist gets nasty and rude, the art you paid for goes to bad. Then I don't want it.
I hate when artists do that shit. When you take commissions you are your store front. And if you went to a restaurant, ordered food you never got and was told to leave you would be fucking pissed. And rightly so. There really needs to be a black list site that names deadbeat artists and customers so people know who to avoid.
Awesome observation of so many toxic artists, Nik!
Those kind of people then blabber about how sad it is that there is so much drama in the fandom...
In my world it is easy:
If you offer something in exchange for money you have the duty to fulfil your part of the business. Even if it is just a hobby-business. Someone gave you money, you took it so fulfill your part of the agreement, goddammit!
Luckily that kind of arseholes is the vast minority of artists but well... if you got to one of those drama furs it is just bad luck for yourself.
I am happy that this artists here that gave us this masterpiece is one of the cool guys who draw honorable for money. :)

This is why I only send money through business invoices so there's a paper trail at this point. I put as much blame on the commissioner as the artist, be smart with your money and protect yourself. There are tools for exactly this, take advantage of them, as you would with any other business.
My record for commissioning art that I eventually received was over 365.
I'd say my record for not having received is still ongoing if the artists hadn't both rubbed it in my face that they were never going to do it until they ended up on my block list.
Yes, I will be linking to this if it happens again.

I've only had this happen once, and sadder yet, the artist was a friend. I commissioned him more so out of the wish to help him out, and the image was a birthday present for another friend. It's been like a month, and the birthday was in just a week, so I asked about the progress, and got yelled at to let him work at his pace. I apologized and let him work, eventually just accepting that it'd be a present for next year.... or the year after.... or the year after that....... Eventually we stopped talking. For years I saw myself on his commission list, and he eventually just removed me.
I mean I just wanted to help to begin with, so I guess the loss isn't that big, but I always feel bad about the fact that the situation had to end in such an unpleasant way....
