Chapter 26: Inanna
Almost everyone in the tent had firmly plastered themselves against the back as the god of war padded in and stood over the nude, unconscious, and thoroughly battered, woman. Morven was one of the few not totally cowering but he wasn’t looking as brave as he would normally have.
“Based on what she just said” Morvan managed glancing between Kate and Lex, “I’m guessing that your disposition will have been changed recently”
Lex took awhile to respond, mostly staring down at the body of his lover when he finally did, “The spell on me was, making me so angry and…. Yes, I am different now”
“well I think I speak for us all that we are glad that you aren’t on a rampage anymore”
Lex glared at the man, “Oh really? It was YOUR lord that had that done to me? You sure you weren’t on board with it?”
Morven swallowed, “I would never be on board with killing my own men.”
“Before that, before you knew that would happen…”
“I, well” Morven sighed, “I was aware that our lord intended to use a powerful creature in the war effort. I… Did not know that you were… er…”
“A monster?” Lex said looking away.
“Can we please just leave it at I was not fully informed? There’s probably been enough death so far”
Lex winced. Yes there had been a good deal of death, much by his own fangs, but the one victim he cared about right now was… “Will she recover?”
“I don’t” Morven started, “My medic doesn’t think so, but the men think she is something more than a normal mortal, this ‘Inanna’ person they keep talking about”
Lex shook his head sadly, “If only she were”
“oh… So I guess she isn’t?”
“That’s the name of an old god. Someone I’m not sure is real at all, and no. My Kate is not her, but I still need to fix her”
The room was quiet for a long moment while Morven waved the reluctant medic over to talk, “S-sorry sir, but there’s nothing I can do. I… It’s my opinion we shouldn’t prolong her suffering”
“Prolong?” Lex asked
“y-yes. she wasn’t… uh.. this spirit, er, thing is breathing for her, she couldn’t’ even manage that on her own and when she wakes. all the broken bones will likely be like torture once the shock wears off”
Lex gritted his teeth and let out a whine, There was little he could do too. He could fake some level of healing spells, but he was a war god, not a doctor, he couldn’t just fix anything beyond the magical equivalent of first aid.
“Dying” The wind announced.
“What!” Lex practically shouted, “No you... keep her going... do something!”
“Cannot”
“No no no nono” Tears were beginning to flow, “What if.. What it I… Like... Gave her some power? I’m not a healer, but maybe if I just pumped her with magic she could heal herself?”
“You. Are. Weak”
Lex growled, “Listen you talking fart. I LOVE her and I’m going to do whatever I can to keep her alive, even if that means I…. Might not pull out of it”
“Too weak. You would fail”
Lex gritted his teeth, the wind was probably right, he knew that. He had burned a LOT of power in the battle and now that he wasn’t in combat rage mode he didn’t have access to most of what was left, and if he tried to go into anther rage he wouldn’t be able to direct it into saving his female, his mate. He didn’t see another option though so he pulled out what little magic he could in preparation to transfer it.
“I am strong”
That stopped him. He stared at his best guess as to where the wind was. IT was hard to tell at the best of times and in the tent, there weren’t even any leaves to blow around to form a face, “You… did you just offer to?”
“Give. some. Open her soul and call”
Lex had a pretty good idea what the wind was talking about, and he wasn’t about to question the offer, not with this. He couldn’t imagine what had gone on between the wind and Kate that the former would be willing to take an immense risk like this for the latter, but that wasn’t his concern now. Lex pulled out what power he could and concentrated it on Kate. He knew her, knew her well and loved her, their souls could easily find each other in a way that would be harder for the wind. So he tugged and prodded around with his mind till he found it. Making a connection he poured some of his own power directly into Kate and vented some more so the wind could see it easily. Hopefully this would all work.
The wind didn’t say anything else once the connection was made, and all lex felt was a surge of power slamming through the conduit that he had opened. The sheer amount actually startled him. He knew how strong he could be when he really got going, a good strong bloodlust, but he wasn’t’ sure he could match the power he suddenly felt even then, the wind was clearly a stronger deity than Lex had previously given him credit for. He was starting to wonder why he had never seen the wind unleashed in full when the torrent of power suddenly ceased. The airflow in the tent grew incredibly still save the shallow breathing of Lex, and Morven, and the other terrified soldiers.
And Kate’s own.
Lex held his tongue, he didn’t want to celebrate too soon, but It did seem like Kate was managing to breath on her own, without the wind pumping himself in and out of her lungs. He leaned down and released an ear gently against her bare chest and fought back a nauseated wince at the noises he heard. Bones shifted, causing blood to bubble around them. Bent bones cracked as they snapped back into shape. Wet slopping noises as tendons and ligaments slipped and slopped back to their homes. IT was all quite disgusting to listen too, but it meant that Kate was healing. Her body knew it was damaged and now had all the power it could possibly need to set that damage right.
Morven wasn’t listening as closely but even he heard the cringeworthy crunches of bones realigning themselves. While trying to remain stoic he asked “What does… that mean?”
“It means that perhaps” Lex started then looked up at the man and smiled. Perhaps a mistake as right now a ‘smile’ was a blood soaked wall of fangs and make the man step back involuntarily. Lex couldn’t help it though, as weak as he felt, and as thoroughly exhausted as he was he was just to happy to not smile, “It mean perhaps she shall be ‘Inanna’ after all.”
Lex looked down at Kate’s rapidly healing body. The original ‘Inanna’ if she had existed in the old days when gods were said to be ACTUALLY immortal, not just ageless when compared to mortals. The ‘real’ Inanna was the goddess of Justice and War, but was also the goddess of Love, and Sex; a truly broad domain of influence that modern gods often lacked. Most of the gods that remained tended to be limited to one domain, like the Wind, or Lex’s own status as the ‘god of war’. He wondered what Kate’s would be. A war goddess? A spreader of love? Would she control the wind, like the being that had given her so much power. Would it be something else entirely? Or would she somehow gain a combination of domains like the old gods?
Lex couldn’t be sure, but for now all that mattered was that it looked like she would in fact survive, and that was all that mattered.
