This hare lady knows that birth is around the corner. Though not beset by labor pains, she knows she has gotten very tight, and the belly has dropped about as far as it can.
Every season it seemed, her belly just keeps getting larger with bigger litters. And she and her mate ensure that they start the next pregnancy right as soon as they can, while she is huge with the current one. Each year brings with it three overlapping pregnancies. And this is the third of this year. So her time of full womb is nearly at end until next breeding season.
Each litter brings leverets with their own personalities. This one, for example, the leveret that always seemed to rest on top of its siblings within, seemed to make it a challenge to push as far through the womb as it could, even when its confines were getting tighter and tighter. Almost as if sensing its approaching birth, the little one seemed intent at first on pushing its own way out in the opposite direction. But soon the movements became as if apprehensive. The mother rubbed her paw over the spot the kicker seemed to love targeting.
"No, my little one... you have very strong legs, but no matter how much you try, this spot will not open for you. You will leave my belly the same way as the rest of your wombmates will, the same as all your brothers and sisters have done."
Another kick, of protest.
"You're not afraid, are you? Do you think I won't know you from the others in there? Do not worry, I will know exactly who you are, whether you are born first or last or in between."
Interesting things happened from that point on.
Where her paw rested, what seemed a final kick of a little footpaw struck against her pad, like a high-five through the womb. As if to say, "See you, on the other side."
She then felt the little ones within start to shift around. She knew enough of movements from previous pregnancies to tell that the kicker was starting to force its way through its siblings, downward.
But not down to the south pole of the belly's curvature.
She wasn't sure how, but the kicker suddenly rested itself right over the birth canal, head in just the right place. Where its umbilical cord was connected within, she couldn't tell, but it was definitely someplace where the leveret could have moved from the top of her belly to the opposite end.
She knew right then that the kicker meant to be born first. Because she suddenly had the sense that right then was the time to get ready for birth. She called out for her mate to come right away.
She wanted to give birth standing up this time. Not that she had much of a choice otherwise... Her body had become so used to labor at this point that it could birth entire litters within moments of the onset of birth pangs. But seconds wouldn't be impossible now. Despite her strong legs, she had a lot of body mass to move, and no time to lay herself down.
No sooner had she called out for her mate did birthing process begin. As her male entered the room, he had just enough time to do a slide dive to between her spread footpaws before she felt the kicker being pushed from the womb and through the opening into the world.
