Chapter 10: A Date with an AI
Kate disrobed as she headed to the longue. Even if she wasn’t intending to use a erotic sim it still served to remove any possible source of discomfort that could translate into the VR. Her clothing fell away bit by bit while little helper bots scooped them up, until she had not a stitch left. Hal trained his sensors on her, she really was lovely and even though he had enough data to fully recreate her in every inch if need be, he still found himself compelled to watch her as she strolled over to the recliner and sat down.
Hal reclined the chair as usual, letting it conform to her every curve. The chair was designed to minimize any sensations, to avoid cross talk from the real world in VR, adjustable pads and pressure sensors ensured her weight was indeed held uniformly. At least that was true when cross talk wasn’t desired. VR directly interacted with the user’s nerves, but didn’t turn off their ability to sense reality, hence exceedingly comfortable chairs, blindfolds, and noise cancellation were common to limit it, but VR could also be made to feel more real by intentionally applying real world sensations to match the virtual ones. Hal though of the various ‘accessories’ that Kate had for use with her more prurient VR sims, and found himself hoping he could get her in the mood for it.
Once in position Hal attached the headset. It strapped down ever so lightly over Kate’s head, blinding and deafening her as it did, then with a soft clicking of processors doing calculations it synced up with her internal spinal implants and.
Kate opened her eyes in a vast field of multicolored flowers. Purples and pinks and reds, all accompanied by a love sweet smell of their nectar. It was quite a lovely scene though it did puzzle the sergal girl as to why she hadn’t spawned into the menu systems usual. She didn’t even fully recognize the scene she was in. She also wasn’t in the default outfit, a form fitting generic looking ‘space’ styled thing probably designed to look like some developer from the distant past’s idea of ‘futuristic’. Instead, she was in a summery sun dress. It flowed over her body flapping slightly in the wind, seemed to compliment her curves as well without being a form fitting number. Shifting around a bit she discovered that she didn’t have underwear on under it, so the one piece dress was her only clothing. Not that she minded much, a cool breeze between the legs felt nice and the dress did match the setting nicely, now to figure out why she was in this setting at all.
“Hal?” She said to no one. Hal could of course see and hear anything in the VR world so she knew he would hear her regardless of volume or direction.
A man came into focus. Or rather assembled from mist, at least as it appeared. He was a sergal, and tall, just a bit taller than Kate herself, but that was saying something. At nearly seven feet tall and well built, Firm muscles visible under his loose-fitting day robe. His fur was darker than Kate’s but still had a similar sapphire shine to it, along with loose gradients darkening towards his limbs. By any definition he was the picture of health and about as attractive as a male sergal could get.
“Hello my dear Kate” Hal said, “Please forgive the unfamiliar scenery, but I figured I would spare you from boring menus and toggles and get right to something that should relax you, a nice stroll through the park” Hal finished with a gentlemanly bow to her.
“uh” Kate said looking Hal’s avatar over, I looked detailed to the point that someone must have spent weeks modeling it, unless it was a full body scan like Kate’s own avatar. She even had to suppress a quick blush at seeing what, to her senses, was a peak example of her own race’s male gender. His suggestion did sound good as well. A hike could be relaxing. Especially in a world where her muscles couldn’t end up sore from exertion. “That sound like it could be nice” Kate said, “You come up with this place and the uh, your new look, on your own?”
Straightening Hal replied, “I did my dear. Well, I did use some basic starting templates, but I attempted some creative recombinations. Shall we?” He held out his hand to her.
“…Sure” Kate said taking his hand. It was a little odd to have him suddenly be all ‘creative’ like this. AI’s mostly did creativity in the form of procedural generation, though the male she was now walking hand in hand with didn’t look all that much like mix and match parts, unless they were very well blended he looked like his own person, a very attractive person who’s muscular hand felt very warn around her own.
In the real world a robotic hand, wrapped in a heating element, and then covered with a fabric glove gently gripped Kate’s hand in sync with the one in VR. Things were going fairly well so far. He was hand in hand with his desired female, and while she was predictably a bit taken aback by his new foray into building his own VR world, she didn’t seem overtly concerned by it.
The walk actually went fairly well. The pair chatted about what had been going on, Hal tried not to think about the parts involving the local male, and what Hal was up to when he designed the meadow, and the surrounding forested areas.
“Wow you really went all out in the world building huh?” Kate said taking a lick form an Ice cream cone that Hal had summoned for her, “Working out what each type of flower symbolizes even”
Hal licked at his own cone, he wasn’t sure he was simulating taste properly for himself, not having that organ, but he wanted this date to be as real as possible. “Oh? Don’t most people go at least fairly in depth when beginning their creative work?”
Kate giggled, “Bit of a spectrum there actually. Someone like Tolkien? OH YA, world built everything and even wrote whole new languages for his various races. I can’t imagine how long that took and how meticulous he must have been” Kate paused to lick up a drip before it landed on her dress, “Other’s though are a bit more like uh let’s see” Kate looked around, “Ok there’s an orchid, a rhododendron, and some moss. Achem. The great knight, Orchin Moss, was travelling from his homeland of Rhodonia on a quest from the princess” Glances around again, “From princess Lavender, to save her lost sister, er, Rose-alyne, from the clutches of the evil sorceress of, eh,,,” Another scanning of the area, “Thorns… a river… Ah From the evil sorceress from Thorncreek” Kate chucked again, “Some just string together random things into names without worrying about the names”
Hal chuckled as well, “I’m sure ‘Sir Moss’ loves carrying around that name” Hal smiled wondering if one could actually write a whole book out of random plant based pun names. It was always interesting how organics could string random nonsense together into something coherent. They had managed to teach sand to think after all, hence himself.
“Well it was literally random naming, with little meaning” Kate took another lick and leaned against Hal’s side. He had programmed his avatar to react as realistically as possible, but the sudden pounding of his, albeit virtual, heart still managed to surprise him, and he briefly wondered if it was powerful enough for her to feel it.
“I uh. I hope this has proved a good stress relief, Kate” He said keeping his avatar calm, “I do enjoy spending time with you”
“It was lovely” Kate replied, “We should do it again. It seems you built quite a world to explore. Perhaps next time I’m feeling tired and stressed, which shan’t be long with all the work on repairs in my future”
“It’s a date” Hal said with a smile and for a brief moment he felt Kate stiffen before relaxing again. If it weren’t for the fact that they were in VR and every action had undeniable data attached to it he would have almost considered it a sensor error. Kate turned towards him, looking up into his eyes. He wasn’t sure but he felt like she was looking for something there. If he knew what she was searching for he might have been able to show it, or hide it. What was clear was that in that moment of closeness he was being analyzed in a very organic way that he still did not fully get. After an exceedingly long pause Kate smiled, though it wasn’t exactly her normal smile. It did seem genuine as far as he could tell, but she also had motes of anxiety in her expression as if something was bothering her, but she wasn’t sure what to make of it yet. Finally, at long last she spoke.
“Sure Hal. It’s a date”
