A thoughtful and supportive idealist, Maven Kelley is a highly creative empath whose reserved yet free-spirited nature draws in those who are captivated by her sensitivity and genuine concern for others.
Much of Maven’s life before the age of eight is kept hidden from her as if the memories of those early years were locked away by some tenebrous influence behind an impenetrable door. From what she’s heard through the keyhole, however, the rabbit could still recall remnants of a home she once knew with a mother, a father, and perhaps even a brother, now separated from her by immeasurable time and distance. In her dreams, the rabbit envisioned this old life she shouldn’t remember in sharp, vivid detail, only to awaken with each new day in The Nekromanteion, a covert research facility beneath the streets of Denver, Colorado. As Maven grew older, such phantoms of this former life felt unreal and wholly incompatible compared to the one she came to lead surrounded by resigned children, scientists clad in white lab coats and the nigh-ubiquitous presence of an overseer with an unwavering grin known only by the name of Mr. Cold. Although this mysterious red wolf—with his reflective sunglasses and incessantly dissonant smile—was her most frequent visitor, Maven never once saw him open his mouth in all the times he spoke with her.
Despite the man’s disquietingly cheery disposition, the one person who left the most indelible impression on Maven’s memory was that of a young otter around her age who received an inordinate amount of care and analysis from their handlers. While the two children were always isolated from each other, Maven never truly forgot the lonely boy of enormous significance who easily captured the undivided attention of everyone involved. In time, much like most other scientists who had examined her, Mr. Cold left on assignment, but during his absence, a most remarkable affair unfolded. One summer day several months after the rabbit turned twelve, an enchanting young woman she’d never met appeared unescorted before Maven’s cell, called the girl by name, and released her with little effort or resistance. The young woman in question was one Cassandra Cassini, a red-haired canine with a penchant for white and beige, whose presence alone seemed to summon surprise and incredulity from Maven’s attendants as she shepherded the rabbit into freedom from beneath the surface.
Miss Cassini then chaperoned Maven to New York City where she sheltered and supervised the rabbit from her posh residence at The Dakota across the street from Central Park. During that time, Maven began to adapt to an unfamiliar life defined by freedom of movement and social activity, but for the shy rabbit, this transition from solitude to solidarity was only made possible through her intrinsic curiosity. Cassini knew that while Maven would remain safe under her watch, the canine determined that, for her best interest, the rabbit should be fostered by a faithful ally far from prying eyes until she could be reunited with her family. Cassini came to conclude in short order that this ally could be none other than Irish hare Conor Ó Cuinn, a neo-Druidic scholar and peripatetic magician. In her eyes, very few of her close confidants could nourish and sharpen Maven’s burgeoning empathic and sibyllic skills quite like Conor.
Thankfully, the twelve-year old rabbit acquired a sudden fondness for the hare and his Ivorian wife, Sylla, when they first met and soon she grew acclimated to the family they had raised together in Moncton, New Brunswick. For the next six years, Conor helped Maven better focus and control her preternatural gifts while Sylla helped Maven learn French and become more at ease in her own skin. In that time, the rabbit forged an identity of her own disconnected from what her old handlers in Denver had expected with passions comprising creative pursuits in prose writing and illustrating. While she was able to create a life filled with love all her own with this adoptive family in Canada, the rabbit never truly forgot the life she once knew from her shrouded past and the faces of those she left behind in that subterranean facility. Now as she leaves this home to study graphic design abroad at New York University, Maven Kelley can’t seem to forget the people she sees so often in her dreams: a mother, a father and perhaps even a brother from some other life.
Per usual, all the kudos for what you see here should really go to :fcsimba:! I can't thank them enough for all the love and care they show my characters. I'm in love with how Maven's design came together through the aid of their talent, hard work and determination. If you haven't yet looked into their gallery, then I'm sure it's well worth your time to investigate what other great examples of good art they have in store!
