Needed a tail for my new Sergal boy, Aries, but finding premade sergal tails proved impossible, none of the sites offering them on customizable bases had what I wanted (long and fluffy!!!!) and I did not have the time, finances or any idea who would even take a commission for a sergal tail, so what am I to do? Make my own tail, of course!
At this point, I need to note that I am A.) definitely not a natural seamstress, 2.) no previous experience with making any aspect of a fursuit, other than minor repairs or modifications on premade things I had purchased and D.) have an unfortunate tendency to 'wing it' rather than watch tutorials or use pre-existing patterns. That said, I think overall, while not without flaws, this turned out pretty nice.
My 'pattern' was a quick drawing done on a big sheet o' paper. Fur used was grey minky from fursuitsupplies.com; the white is no-name stuff from Wal-Mart that actually is pretty soft and sleek and doesn't shed much. I was surprised. Pressed for time, I couldn't find any long pile black fur I was happy with for the tail tip, so I went the cheap route and just took a black Sharpie to some leftover white fur. Couldn't get the solid black I hoped for, but the end result suits this character better anyway, since he has a mohawk that is sort of salt and pepper colored, anyway. So it matches. I used a cut up coat hanger wire to support the curve a bit more and stuffed with polyfill. My work is a bit uneven in places, but not super noticeable. It's around 36"- not quite a floor dragger for me due to the curve. I'm happy with it, especially since I'm sure a high quality commission would have cost me a few hundred vs. about $25 I spent on supplies.
