Chapter 20: Deeper
Atasi barely heard Sam talk, she was transfixed by what she was seeing. The watcher was half in and half out of the sin scar, her tool / sword was going crazy orbiting around her like a swarm of golden needles rather than any solid form, and her fur rippled with the force emanating from the scar. Things that were invisible not to long ago illuminate by the impossible colors coming off of it, shining over the room and dancing over the watcher’s body as well as Atasi’s own. Everything was so surreal and fantastic that she couldn’t quite decide how things looked under this unnatural light. What she did know was that the watcher herself was quite the beautiful sight to behold.
Atasi’s musing and staring came to a very abrupt end when something hit her. The blow came from behind and bowled her over onto the floor, her back stinging from the impact and her lungs grabbing for air. The blow had come so suddenly she hadn’t reacted at all, and what make it all the weirder was that it came from a sold wall
Gasping and turning to look she saw an entity. It’s appearance was almost indescribable, though largely because it wasn’t’ fixed. It looked like a man in one eye blink then like a fanged monstrosity with too many mouths the next, and it indeed was emerging from the wall, and coming toward her.
“Give me a bigger gun and line up, we’re going after them” Agent Cybele Nyx shouted to the teem members that weren’t currently having an existential crisis.
“You cannot be serious!” Blythe replied, “Cyborg zombie monsters come pouring out of a basement and you want to go in after them”
Cybele glared at him, “Out here isn’t much safer”
“What do you mean?”
“What do you THINK is responsible for the teams in the forest not responding?” she grabbed an assault weapon and started loading it up, “The tracks leading to the woods are more of these things I wager. Now if anyone is still alive down there, we need to save them and learn whatever we can about the threat, before it gets even worse.”
“I. uh… right”
“Now grab your men and” Turns to Skyler of the bomb squad, “We probably won’t have signal underground so call in… wherever you can. Army if possible. They already sent you over, lets see if they can send people with guns too”
The space marine saluted and fiddled with his radio while Cybele and her crew started their descent.
Atasi skittered away from the thing approaching her, She had no idea what the hell it could possibly be till it passed in by a box or other obstacle. The thing vanished temporarily when in shadow, or at least the part of it that was in shadow was invisible, or more accurately it was only visible under the same strange light that illuminated the watcher. Only one conclusion could be drawn from this. This thing was a demon. An actual demon outside of any host, only visible under the unnatural light and using huge amounts of power to make itself physical.
The shapeless monster rushed forward, sprinting hard, and Atasi tried to throw herself to her feet, she knew she wasn’t’ going to be fast enough, but for some reason the expected blow never came. Staggering up and spinning around to see what was going on she caught a glimpse of the thing just before it collided with the watcher, sending both sprawling and forcing the watcher to let go of the scar.
“NO!” Atasi shouted, “Sam where?!” She glanced around and saw that Sam had his own problems. The door he was guarding at the end of the hall was gathering more and more holes as arms, some fleshy and some metallic, attempted to punch, claw and force their way through. Sam was wielding his table legs as hard as he could, bashing and smashing every hand that emerged in the highest stakes game of whack-a-mole ever. He looked like he was being driven by fear alone at this point. If that door failed, he wouldn’t be able to fight them off.
In the mean time the watcher was wrestling hard with the demon on top of her. The beast’s hand grew to a disproportionately huge size till it could close all the way around her torso while the other one pounded on her. She was forming her weapon into whatever shapes she could make quickly. Jamming golden dagger after golden dagger into the demon’s body, but it didn’t seem to be having enough of an effect.
“Where the hell did, they go?” One of the cops asked.
Noone had an answer as the excursion Cybele was leading was moving faster and faster. They had been very cautions at first but the deeper then went with no targets in sight the more they accelerated. Now more interested in catching up to their prey than carefully approaching a fight.
“The claw marks definitely keep going down” Blythe said, “Guess they are at the bottom”
“Agreed” Said Cybele, “Double time!”
They ran down stairs after stairs, they were keeping their eyes open for wounded, but didn’t’ have time to fully search each basement level while giving chase, and they knew that they better not give their enemy time to do whatever they were planning.
What did give them pause was when they came to a level and found a body. It looked like one of the monsters, uninjured, but still not moving at all. It was as if it just sat down and stopped living. A few quick pops of bullets into its skull to be sure and they continued onward.
The trail split at the last stairwell. Some seemed to go down to the bottom level and others seemed to leave at this floor. With a signal Cybele directed Blythe to take some officers and explore this level while she would lead the rest to the basement. He nodded and moved out, at this point none of them were speaking, all far too overloaded with suspense to bother with conversation as they continued their chose paths.
Finally reaching the bottom level they slowly formed a wall and tried to follow the scratches on the floor. Concrete wasn’t the best thing to follow tracks in, but those with metal claws could still leave scuffs, and a soft noise she could swear was getting louder
Sure enough there was a sound of some kind, hard to make out at first but becoming clearer as they moved closer. It sounded like a pinging of metal and metal, accompanied by ripping noises. As they got closer and closer they heard growls accompany the other sounds and rounding a corner finally found the source.
A relatively small gang of the robot freaks was tearing at a metal door. It was hard to tell but there appeared to be motion on the other side that the freaks didn’t like. The pinking noise was apparently coming form someone on the other side of the door fighting back against the monsters.
Cybele knew there was little time to lose, if there was indeed a survivor, they had to act now. She lined up with her men, aimed her rifle at the monsters, and at the top of her lungs she shouted, “If you can hear me, take cover NOW!”
And they opened fire.
Atasi glanced around in a panic. The watcher had told her that it took a lot of power for demons to be physical on their own like this, coupled with the stabbing it would surely run out of power before long. The problem is that for right now it appeared to be stronger than the watcher, especially with the disadvantage she was presently in, being pinned down and pounded on. Atasi wasn’t sure if the watcher was killable, but she knew they definitely didn’t want to find out! So before her mind could find a logical reason to stop her, she grabbed the heaviest looking box she could find and charged the demon.
She Jumped at the beast bringing the box down on his head / heads and slammed into its side with all her weight. To her surprise it actually seemed to work. It staggered to the side, letting go of the watcher for a moment and swatting the box away. Atasi rolled after the slam and quickly got back up to her feet, just in time to feel an enormous hand close on her. She screamed and could have sworn she felt a rib start to crack when the monster tightened its grip and lifted her into the air.
Worthless flesh
She wasn’t quite sure where the unusual voice came from. It almost felt like it was in her head, but she had little time to contemplate it before she felt herself moving. The creature holding her almost effortlessly underhanded her like a soft ball into the air.
Rot in the Abyss
Atasi was tumbling through the air, not sure what was up and what was down, until she was suddenly swallowed by a bright left and felt as if her entire body was engulfed in a pressurized oil like atmosphere. She hit something not quite solid and stopped tumbling. Glancing up she saw the scar, though it looked different. Instead of being a green thing emitting a sickly glow it looked dark and the glow seemed to flow into it from all around. It was like an inverted view of the scar.
She was on the other side of it.
