It was a game that my mother just brought home from a pawn shop one day unsure of what it was and for that I really love it
I didn't discover it because of the internet or it's cult following, just by accident
Made it more genuinely enjoyable

I've been enjoying this as my first playthrough. I'm way behind the curb, but better late than never!

I was late to the party too. It's a great game. The one before it I made it into pretty far but I still haven't beat it. The sequel I have played three times to the same part and quit.

This one, I have played many times over and over. I wouldn't call myself a die hard fan but I do love the game.

It was nice of them to make you go through Shroom's dungeon ahead of time so you could just get right to him later.

Well, as far as I know, it was released in Japan to critical acclaim. Then a fan translation was eventually made so english-speaking folk can play.

NOA hasnt expressed any interest in releasing it officaly however. I'm not entirely certain as to why.

i wonder if we'll ever get a fourth installment of the series...

I remember that being the case for Mother 2, but I wasnt aware the same issues persisted in Mother 3.

I haven't looked much into the game but as far as I know, there are four reasons why Mother 3 will never get a stateside release:

1. Tanehineri Island
You have to eat hallucinogenic mushrooms and get through the island in a drug-induced psychedelic daze. Strong Emphasis on the words "Drug" and "High".

2. The Magypsies
The appearance of these characters are disturbing in the fact that they look like men but refer to themselves, and even dress up, as women. In other words, the Magypsies are cross-dressing drag queens.

3. Scene with Ionia
Lucas must bathe with Magypsy Ionia to learn about PSI powers.
A juvenile bathing with an adult implies both pedophilia and homosexuality.

4. Ocean Walk
When you're about to run out of oxygen, you have to get kissed by an effeminate merman in order to refill. Obvious hint of homosexuality.

There's also some disturbing dialogue on Tanehineri Island that would never sit well with younger gamers.
But I won't spoil it for you if you want to find out for yourself.

Probably perceived lack of interest from the public at large. It's basically a cult classic--the people who love it love it a lot, but even in Japan, compare its sales to the big-name blockbuster titles like your Dragon Quests and Final Fantasies and... well... yeah.

Plus, it's a GBA game. No one plays GBA anymore--maybe back when the DS used to have a GBA slot, but even that has been dropped. They'd have to not only translate it, but port it to DS or something to even have a chance of success, and they probably just don't think the amount of effort and resources that would take would be worth it for how small they perceive that chance to be even if they actually did go through with it.

Which isn't to say it isn't absolutely amazing, of course--only that it's just another one of those tragically sad examples of the occasional disparity between how successful a game deserves to be and how successful it actually is. See also: Retro Game Challenge, Psychonauts.
