Prior to the establishment of the Norte Chico civilization, Icaxhu was birthed from a ritual by a South American fishing tribe, in a desperate appeal for enough fish to feed their village. The following day, he emerged before the villagers from beneath the sea. In his clutches was the giant egg he hatched from, and it's leathery shell was full of fish. The villagers rejoiced, and accepted the monster as their god. Icaxhu, humbled, asked that he live among them as one of their own. The villagers slowly realized the extent of the naga's power: his divine power was in birthing a flourishing aquatic habitat from a dead, barren sea. The naga god became responsible for the stability of the fishing village, and that village prospered. This prosperity coincided with the foundation of the Norte Chico.

Icaxhu is naturally aquatic, but is also capable of living and moving on land. His fins and webbing contributes to underwater locomotion. His gills are capable of producing up to twice the oxygen he would need. This allows him to share a breath with another while immersed underwater. He is capable of reproduction with others, but none of his serpentine or godly traits can be passed down to his offspring. He also has a brood pouch, although it's purpose is strictly to incubate the eggs of aquatic creatures, including eggs that are more vulnerable to environmental factors, such as weather and predation. His diet is mainly seafood.

Behaviorally, Icaxhu is a lover, and treats the villagers as if he were a villager himself. He is known to give comfort to those in need of it. He never kills any person for any reason, and in fact would go out of his way to rescue villagers from peril, such as drowning.
