For certain Pokémon, it's all about dominance. Being on top, in control - whoever proves themselves, they're the one calling the shots. Now Pokéballs, they're great inventions, insipid in their influence so that even great dragons can be bent to the will of their captor.
But where's the fun in that? That's like playing poker with five aces up your sleeve. Craps with loaded dice. Sure, you win, you get money, but you're missing the experience, see?
If these Pokémon follow dominance, then I gotta earn that.
You asked about Mightyena, right? Great example. They follow a pack dynamic, looking to the strongest for guidance. Well, I like to throw my hat into the ring. They don't expect humans to just waltz right into the middle of their little alcove in the trees - more taken aback then anything. But they're smart cookies, they see no Pokéballs, they cotton on to what's up. One eventually rocks up to me, all a-swagger, ears up and smirk on those black lips, and... we get down to it. A real fight. No tech, no badges. Mano a 'mono.
What? Take 'em out? Hah, what do you take me for, some kinda prize fighter? I've lost more of those bouts I can count. If I'm lucky, they just let me off with a heavy bite on the leg. Here, look - see those scars? Real mean sumbitch up in the heavy forest last month. One eye, one ear. I'm not bad, but I've had more than one dog leave his entire dental history in my shin. And if I'm unlucky, well... see those scars? From a scratching hindpaw. Now just think, what kinda position has that boy gotta be in to get a hindpaw there...? ...Ah. Now you're catchin' on. Anythin' goes with those Mightyena, let me tell you.
And that, my man, is why I do it. Because all's fair in forest and fightin'. Sure, sometimes I lose. Often, I lose. They love that.
But when I win? And they give that fierce glare, that begruding walk... ah, the way they graze their teeth over me telling me they could, if they wanted to, they could - and yet they don't, because that's how it works... and instead, they lick - always long, slow, savouring almost as they accept today's master...
That's the experience. And I wouldn't miss it.
And hey. I'll tell ya somethin' else for free.
They're always the first to try again next time.

The legendary Alpha of my deepest dreams, heck yeah!
When an alpha snarls and shows his/her dominance in such a super effective way... oh boy, i'm literally 101% done and totally under their power! :3
Once again you did it, eh Master DV? When you realize these stunning pictures accompanied from certain succulent written pieces, i'm surrounded from an unstoppable desire to worship/read everything with passion! I've never (maybe rarely) encountered another artist like you with such amazing talents, both on the drawing side and then, on your writing side as well. ^w^
How lucky this yeen pup... Oh, and their master is enjoying the service as if there will be no tomorrow~
*applauses and hugs* never stop to amaze us, you legendary master!

Well sir, yes. I'll say that's fine for some people. I bet it's fun, a new maw -or new paw- every day. But that's all it is, really. Fun. A challenge perhaps, but it isn't much different than the kids going 'round the gyms picking up badges. You don't gain anything that really matters. Sure, balls are a cheap trick but well...
Pokemon.... it's about togetherness, growing stronger not just as a trainer but as partners, the challenge and mutual struggle of overcoming yourself and your limitations. Every dragon was a charmander once. Some may like striving for dominance with yeen packs, but I prefer waking up to a 300 pound arcanine trying to ride me. That's the kind of bond you can't get any other way.
Speaking of, if you could point me towards a pack, someone needs to let off some steam, and I'm only one man, my back's killing me.
