A split scene art piece I have turned up in a recent "sift and sort" of my art collection.
This was an all too common scene over the bomber airfields in England in 1943. Aircraft returning from missions would fire flares to let the med crews on the ground know that they had wounded on board.
Update: Since the artist of this is on FA and he's posted this on his page I figure I can credit him now.

i have seen this posted once... somewhere here before. so unless this is the second time you posted this i think i may have seen the original artist. but be damned if i emember who but anyway. its a beautiful piece and it does give a good feeling of those times... then again if i remember right more often then not 'wounded' meant dead...or dying. :/ not pleasent times back then..
Now, you want to see a B-17 taking a hell of a pounding and keep going look at this video from "Dogfights: Long Odds". Not only does one wonder how the plane made it through but you have to wonder at the courage of the crew to go on with their mission when they could have bugged out and avoided the battle.

hmmm aye i do admit that was a one in a million if not higher chance of not getting through that. but it must have hhelped alittled to mount those extra 6 fifties all over her... and i bet they also added a little more armor.. but wasn't really mentioned but i imagine it happened.
but hey at least most of em got home *nods* still felt sorry for the bomber who died but not before getting 2 kills with his gun...
