Somebody wanted me to find some Polynesian tattoo references, so I thought I'd help out with some Moko. Fell through but I felt inspired enough to pull out my reference book and doodle from it. I spent three months or so researching moko for one of my year 11 art pieces. Which I ended up doing in...sgraffito. Yes it nearly killed me.
Anyway, here you have Ceylon in her more or less permanently grumpy state adorned with some experimental patterns that aren't so experimental.
Moko tattooes are not for the feint of heart as applying them involves vegetable dyes, fungusy caterpillars and a chisel. The closer the lines are together and more intricate the pattern, the better quality the moko.
Did these for fun, I guess.
Moko is the traditional practice of the New Zealand Maoris, Ceylon is my own defunct buddy.
